St Mirren suffered that major disappointment of missing out on 6th place in the table to St Johnstone thanks to a late equaliser in their game against Hamilton Academical last time out in the league.

However, Jim Goodwin was still insistent that there is plenty for them to play for this season, with 7th now the aim for St Mirren in the league and also a potential run in the Scottish Cup. Their chances of that were boosted by them getting revenge on Hamilton with a 3-0 win to take them through to the next round of the Scottish Cup and they can now hope to build on that victory.

It has been a season of progress for St Mirren, who finished last season in 9th place and just six points clear of bottom of the table Hearts. They have shown that there is the potential for them to kick on and challenge for a top-half finish next term, if they can make the right sort of tweaks to the squad over the summer transfer window.

If they are to do that they will need to avoid similar transfer mistakes to these nine players who flopped at the club that we are going to take a look at here. Click ‘next’ to scroll through the list.

St Mirren have tended to recruit decently in the goalkeeping department in more recent times, but one signing that did not work out for them was David Cornell who arrived on loan from Swansea City in the summer of 2013 for what should have been the entirety of the 2013/14 season.

However, Cornell struggled at St Mirren and he got off to a poor start to his loan spell making some mistakes in his first few appearances. The keeper was eventually dropped from the side and was sent back to Swansea early in January. He is now with Ipswich Town after a successful recent spell with Northampton Town.

Another player who failed to live up to the expectations of St Mirren when he arrived at the club was midfielder Kyle Hutton who arrived in the summer of 2016 after a solid campaign with Queen of the South in the Scottish Championship the year before.

However, the former Rangers player would prove to be a disappointing addition with his performances on the field were not up to scratch and he was only able to make 11 appearances in the league before being shipped off on loan to Airdrieonians. After just a single season with St Mirren, he left permanently for Dumbarton in the summer of 2017.

Another player who struggled to perform for St Mirren during a loan spell with the club was forward Nicolai Brock-Madsen, who had arrived on loan from Birmingham City in the summer of 2018.

Brock-Madsen was not able to impress with his performances on the field for the club and he was not able to register a single goal in any of his five appearances in all competitions. The decision was made by Oran Kearney to end his loan spell in October 2018 after he had taken over from Alan Stubbs.

This is another player that failed to live up to expectations at St Mirren that was signed by Alan Stubbs, with Cole Kpekawa not proving to be an addition that worked out following his arrival in the summer of 2018 after he had left Colchester United.

Kpekawa was in need of finding himself a settled home where he could kick-on and build on the early hype around him when he burst onto the scenes at Queens Park Rangers. The defender had a solid enough debut in a cup tie against Kilmarnock, but that was as good as it got and after failing to impress in his four league appearances he was released in January 2019.

Another player that proved to be a flop at St Mirren was winger Jamie McCluskey, who arrived at the club in September 2010 on a one-year deal but failed to really justify his addition to the squad.

McCluskey is a player who at times looked like he had some ability, but he was often marshalled out of games and had a very limited impact for St Mirren. The winger was only able to make three league appearances for the club before being sent out on loan to Clyde and upon his return, in the summer he was allowed to leave the club.

Continuing the theme of players who did not live up to expectations at St Mirren is forward Yoann Arquin, who was signed by the club in January 2015 after his departure from Ross County with who he had spent two seasons and scored six goals in 35 appearances.

Arquin’s time at the club was summed up by the red card he was shown 37 minutes into his debut, although that was later overturned to a yellow following an appeal. The forward did not score a single goal in his 12 appearances and was released at the end of the 2014/15 campaign after their relegation down to the Championship.

Another forward to make this list having endured a poor spell with St Mirren during the 2014/15 campaign is James Marwood, who failed to perform for the club during their relegation season after being signed with hope he could add the goals they needed upfront.

Marwood was signed by the club on a one-year deal with an option for a further year in the summer of 2014 after he had managed to fire in 38 goals in 108 games for Gateshead. However, for St Mirren, he failed to score a single goal in his 13 appearances and saw his contract terminated in January 2015 after less than half a season with the club.

It seems impossible not to do this list without mentioning Eric Djemba-Djemba, with the former Manchester United and Aston Villa midfielder having been a signing that looked very promising for St Mirren only for it to fail to work out for both parties.

Djemba-Djemba arrived at the club in February 2014 with Danny Lennon hailing his arrival when he first made the move. However, the midfielder was a disappointment to say the least and he managed to make just three appearances for the club before leaving at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

One of the most expensive transfer mistakes that St Mirren have made rounds of the list here. Josh Heaton was signed by Alan Stubbs in the summer of 2018 from Darlington after he had impressed with the Jamie Vardy V9 academy and they paid around £75,000 to bring him into the club.

Heaton would prove to be a very poor investment and he was never able to make a single appearance for St Mirren in the league. He did manage to make two appearances in the cup competitions before spending time on loan with Kidderminster Harriers. The club cut their sizeable losses on him in the summer of 2019 releasing him from his contract.
