Southampton are one of the more established sides in the Premier League.

With that comes the opportunity to sign some of the best players in the game who will give you every chance of kicking on and pushing towards the top flight's top six, and even European competition.

But that hasn't always been the way on the South Coast.

For want of a better word, the Saints have signed some right stinkers over the years.

Some signings don't work out because of injury or bad form, while others are doomed to fail from the start with many questioning why they arrived in the first place.

With that in mind we take a look at nine Southampton signings who completely flopped.

A player who simply didn't live up to his £1.5million price tag - especially with the club on the verge of administration.

Thomas made 54 appearances for the club over three seasons but the fact that he was released at the end of his deal and allowed to join Doncaster Rovers pretty much sums up how his time at the club went.A player who was signed for £2.6million, Van Damme simply didn't cut the mustard on the South Coast.

The wing-back made just six appearances for the club before the Saints cut their substantial losses and allowed him to leave for Werder Bremen on loan as the club suffered relegation in 2005.

A player who endured a blink-and-you'll-miss-it career with Southampton.

After joining from Skonto Riga in 1999, the midfielder made just two substitute appearances for the club which equaled a grand total of 10 minutes of action.

The midfielder had enjoyed a successful career with Notts County, Leicester City and Aston Villa before rocking up on the South Coast.

Draper joined Southampton for £1.98million but was limited to just 22 average appearances for the club before hanging up his boots.

After thriving with Heart Of Midlothian and Rangers it seemed like a real coup when Southampton signed the midfielder in 2003.

Unfortunately McCann's two and a half years at the club were marred by injury as he made 43 appearances before having his contract terminated by mutual consent.

The striker followed former manager, Mauricio Pochettino to Southampton in the summer of 2013 after the Saints paid almost £13million for the player.

Three goals in his first six months with the club was as good as it got as a training ground bust-up led to him being shipped back to Italy on loan and never to be seen again on the South Coast.Signed by Mauricio Pellegrino, Carrillo's career just never got going.

Despite joining for £19million the foward made just 10 appearances for the club in his six months on the South Coast before following Pellegrino to Spanish side Leganes in he summer of 2018.

A player who arrived from Mexican side Necaxa in 2001, Delgado promised huge amounts after joining the club.

Described as 'a handful' by Gordon Strachan, Delgado made 11 league appearances during three years on the South Coast, but his time was best summed up by Strachan saying: "I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yoghurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado", a line that was delivered after the forward refused to learn English.

It's astonishing that it didn't work out..

You didn't think we'd forgotten about Ali Dia, did you?

The striker arrived at the club in 1996 and managed to convince Graeme Souness that he was the cousin of 1996 FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah.

After somehow securing a trial for himself, Dia was due to face Arsenal in a reserve match but missed his chance when the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Instead, Souness threw him straight into the first team and Dia replaced Matt Le Tissier in a Premier League clash with Leeds United and lasted just 20 minutes before never being seen in professional football again.
