Barnsley are set for an interesting summer transfer window ahead, with the Tykes looking to build on a hugely impressive league campaign.

Valérien Ismaël's side surprised a number of teams in the second-tier this term, as they finished fifth in the Championship table, in a season to remember for the Oakwell faithful.

They fell short in their bid to win promotion into the Premier League though, as the Tykes were beaten by Swansea City on aggregate in their play-off semi-final.

But there will have been plenty of positives to take from this season, and if Ismaël can keep his key players at the club, then it wouldn't come as much of a surprise to see the Yorkshire-based side challenging for promotion into the top-flight in the Championship once again next term.

We take a look at NINE free-agents who Barnsley should have on their transfer radar this summer, ahead of the 2021/22 league campaign.

Diedhiou is likely to be a player attracting significant transfer interest heading into the summer transfer window, following his release from Bristol City.

The striker scored 51 goals in 169 appearances in his time with the Robins, but left the club when his contract reached a conclusion at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Diedhiou has already been attracting interest from the likes of Middlesbrough heading into the summer, but it remains to be seen as to what the future holds for him at this stage.

Barnsley have recently lost Daryl Dike, with the forward returning to Orlando City from his loan spell at Oakwell, and Diedhiou could be the ideal player to replace him in attack for next season.

Andre Wisdom is next up, with the defender having a considerable amount of experience under his belt in the Championship.

The former Liverpool defender was on the books with Derby County in the 2020/21 season, but he's set to be released when his contract expires in the summer.

Barnsley could certainly benefit from adding a player of his experience to their defensive options, as even if he doesn't start every week, his experience could come in useful when it comes to aiding the development of the younger Barnsley players both on and off the field.

This could turn out to be a smart bit of business by the Tykes in the summer.

Norwich City have recently announced that Vrancic will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The midfielder played his part for the Canaries over the years, both in the Championship, and whilst they were playing their football in the Premier League.

Vrancic has shown his quality in the Championship, with the midfielder chipping in with ten goals and seven assists in their promotion-winning campaign in 2018/19.

If they can secure an agreement to land his signature, then this could prove to be a shrewd move by Barnsley, as they look to add to their strength in depth.

Sammy Ameobi is next up, with the winger recently being set for release by Nottingham Forest.

He had been with the Reds since 2019, and went on to make 81 appearances in total for them, having previously been on the books with Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers earlier in his career.

Ameobi might not have been the most consistent of players in his time with Nottingham Forest in terms of goals and assists, but his pace and trickery on the ball could cause opposition defenders a number of problems going forwards.

Even if he wasn't a regular starter with the Tykes, then he'd be a useful option to have off the substitutes bench.

Yuri Ribeiro is the second former Nottingham Forest player on the list, with the left-back set to become a free-agent this summer.

The defender spent two years with the Reds, and was a regular under the management of Sabri Lamouchi. But after Lamouchi departed the City Ground, he found regular minutes hard to come by with the Reds, before being released when his contract expired at the end fo the 2020/21 season.

Ribeiro has experience at Championship level, and his energy at both ends of the pitch could make him a solid signing for Barnsley ahead of the new season, as they look to challenge for promotion into the Premier League once again.

Harris is a free-agent following his release from Sheffield Wednesday, after spending two years with the Owls.

The winger has played the majority of his football in the Championship, and made 88 appearances in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday last term.

But his efforts weren't quite enough, as they were relegated into League One after a frustrating campaign, which concluded under the management of Darren Moore.

His energy from wide areas could see him fit in well with Barnsley, but you would imagine that he won't be short of offers heading into the summer transfer window.

Dalsgaard has been with Brentford, and has been a regular in the Bees' first-team over the years, which includes this year's campaign in the Championship.

He's set to become a free-agent in the summer when his contract expires with Brentford heading into the top-flight this summer at long last.

But it seems hard to believe that he'd be a regular in the Premier League with Brentford, so his future remains unclear at this stage.

Waghorn is yet to agree a new deal with Derby County, which means that he could be attracting interest in the coming weeks.

The forward has operated in a central role or out wide for the Rams in the 2020/21 season, and he played his part in the club's final day survival in the Championship.

Waghorn scored five goals and was on hand to provide five assists for his Derby team-mates this term, but with no new deal agreed as of yet, his future could lie elsewhere.

Barnsley need added depth in attacking areas of their team after Daryl Dike returned to Orlando City, and Waghorn could be the ideal replacement for him.

Sheffield Wednesday full-back Matt Penney is the last name on the list, with the defender set to become a free-agent after leaving the Owls this summer.

He found regular minutes hard to come by with the Owls' senior squad, and spent time out on loan with German side FC St. Pauli in the 2019/20 season.

Penney made 32 appearances in total for Sheffield Wednesday in the 2020/21 season, but wasn't offered a new deal, as they were relegated into League One this term.

At the age of 23, he could turn out to be a good signing for Barnsley, who could benefit from adding depth to their squad ahead of new league campaign.
