Just when it seemed as though Sheffield Wednesday were about to turn a corner following the release of many big earners from the club following their relegation to League One, a new bombshell has struck which could effect Darren Moore's planning for next season.

The likes of Jordan Rhodes, Adam Reach, Keiren Westwood, Tom Lees and others have all departed the Owls with their contracts coming to an end, as Wednesday look to trim the wage bill as they get set to play in the third tier for the first time since 2012.

Monetary issues crept in though before the final day of the 2020/21 campaign and some players are now considering handing in their two-week notices to the club on the back of not being paid for several months, per the Sheffield Star.

It's not what Moore wants to see especially when he needs to bolster the squad instead of losing his current contracted players - and when he does get the chance to strengthen it's likely going to be free agents and loan players.

Let's look at nine players who could arrive at Hillsborough this summer as part of a potential Moore revolution.

The current senior centre-backs on Wednesday's books right now are just Chey Dunkley and Julian Borner, so it's clearly a position that the Owls need to look at and address.

A lot of the soon-to-be free agent defenders from the Championship are getting on a bit in their careers but one who isn't is Robertson, who is in his prime at the age of 27 but only played 16 times in the league for Rotherham United last season.

If you believe reports then he has a number of offers from across Europe - Slask Wroclaw, Hapoel Jerusalem and his former club Aberdeen - but it's Wednesday's league rivals Portsmouth who are in pole position to land Robertson.

This is where Wednesday could sneak in but it could be too late if it takes a while for the wages issue to clear up.

Darren Moore played with wing-backs for his two months in charge of the Owls last season - more often than not deploying Adam Reach there, with the occasional Matt Penney appearance.

Both of those players have now departed though so it's left a real void at either left-back or wing-back depending on the system Moore is going to deploy, and that means two new players may need to be signed to compete with each other.

One of those could be Bell, who has spent three-and-a-half years at Blackburn Rovers, playing 90 times in the league but after losing his spot in the team this past season to Leeds loanee Barry Douglas, the 27-year-old now finds himself a free agent.

A very attack-minded player, Jamaica international Bell could be a good fit at Hillsborough.

A player who could be an even better capture though is James, who really rose to the occasion with Doncaster Rovers from a personal standpoint this past season.

Darren Moore knows James very well having managed him since 2019 at the Keepmoat Stadium and earlier this season the 27-year-old was shifted into more of a midfield role as well as playing as a left-winger - both positions he seemed to flourish in away from his natural left-back spot.

James ended the season with seven goals and if Moore continues with his three centre-back formation then James would be an ideal fit for that wing-back spot - however at this time he's believed to want a Championship move.

If Wednesday pulled off a coup to reunite Moore and James, he could play further forward if the manager decides to revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation that he more often than not used with Doncaster.

A player who can play on the left of a back four but also cover in midfield may be useful and in Tommy Rowe there is a free agent who can do both of those things.

He may be 32 years old now, but Rowe still has energy left in his legs having played 31 Championship games for Bristol City last season - most of them coming at left-back.

Rowe could potentially find himself at a club lower down in the second tier ranks but many League One outfits will no doubt fancy taking him and being Manchester-born, he may want to come back up north.

Wednesday seem to have a decent amount of central midfielders, but if Moore decides to use the aforementioned 4-2-3-1 system then he will need to acquire another attacking midfielder.

As a player who has been in both Barcelona and Arsenal's academy you have to have a certain amount of technical ability, and Jon Toral has just that.

After promising loan spells at Brentford and Birmingham City earlier in his career, the Spaniard made a £3 million move to Hull City in 2017, but it was a year later when his injury troubles started and he only ended up having 49 league outings in three seasons for the Tigers.

Toral spent last season at Birmingham City, but made just 18 appearances in all competitions as injuries took their toll again.

Still only 26 though, Toral should easily find a club and Wednesday could be the team to take a chance on him - but he needs to prove that he can stay fully-fit.

An alternative to potentially come in as a starting attacking midfielder is a player who knows South Yorkshire very well in Moncur.

The son of former West Ham man Jon spent over two years at Wednesday's close neighbours Barnsley, but after it failed to work out for him at Oakwell he made a switch to Luton Town where he ended up making his way back into the Championship with the Hatters.

After making just 21 appearances this past season though under Nathan Jones - many of those coming from the bench - Moncur is departing Kenilworth Road and he could be the right man to drive Wednesday forward as he's proven himself to be League One quality on a number of occasions.

A couple of wingers may also be needed and one whose future at Blackburn Rovers is entirely up in the air is Chapman.

Having failed to live up to his early potential at Middlesbrough, Chapman joined Rovers in 2019 after a loan spell the year before, but he's appeared in just 12 league games in two-and-a-half years.

A new contract has been offered but that may only be to try and secure a transfer fee for the 23-year-old this summer - he impressed in a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town in the final four months of the season, scoring seven times in 23 matches and you'd expect many League One teams to be trying to get him in - the Owls should be one of them.

With the future of Josh Windass uncertain because of multiple interested teams in his signature, Wednesday may need to scour the market for some cheap options.

One that could be quite a risk but one potentially worth taking is that of Moult, who has been released by Preston North End after three-and-a-half years.

PNE fans loved Moult for his commitment and drive - he wasn't the most prolific despite scoring goals for both Wrexham and Motherwell but he started the 2019/20 campaign with a goal against Wigan - then was ruled out for 18 months with a knee injury.

Having worked himself back to fitness in the final months of this past season, Moult never saw another minute of action for the Lilywhites but he's adamant that he's ready to play football again - he just needs a club to take a chance on him and the Owls could be the ones to do so.

Another player who could do with stepping down from the Championship to get regular minutes, Baldock has done some of his best work at League One level having hit double figures for both MK Dons and Bristol City.

Baldock hasn't hit double figures since the 2016/17 Championship season with Brighton & Hove Albion, and in 20 league matches this past season with Reading he failed to find the back of the net - albeit he was restricted to mainly cameos off the bench.

If Windass departs, Wednesday could end up with Callum Paterson as their main striker but he will need assistance and at the age of 32, Baldock could provide just that.
