Charlton Athletic supporters will be looking forward to seeing what their side can produce this summer in terms of signing players.

This window, for the first time in a good while, seems to be one where Charlton are on a really stable footing with genuine optimism for the future.

Under Nigel Adkins they finished the season well and in Thomas Sandgaard they appear to have an owner that's willing to back the manager and spend where it is needed in order to improve the side.

Could the Addicks be wise in looking at the free agent market, though? There are certainly some decent players knocking about that are either available for nothing or are on course to be in the coming weeks and it's usually a good way to supplement a squad.

Let's take a look at nine worth the Addicks' consideration as we head into the summer months and look to next year...

Reece James is a very solid left-back and knows this division well whilst, at the age of 27, is a player that is in his prime years and will have plenty to offer for the next few seasons.

He's a player that could come straight into the Charlton team, too, with Ben Purrington the only left-back at the club now that Ian Maatsen has left - though he was obviously used elsewhere at times under Adkins anyway.

Clearly, there's a position there for James and he's one of the better left-backs in League One, so it would make sense for Charlton to take a look.

Clark Robertson is a centre-half right in his prime years and with the position at Charlton set for some changes this summer, it could be wise of them to look at bringing him in.

Other League One clubs have already been linked with him with the likes of Portsmouth getting touted and so it is a move that could well be of interest to the Addicks.

Akin Famewo has left the club after his loan spell, of course, and there seems a need for at least one new centre-half at Charlton so Robertson wouldn't be a bad idea.

Harry Chapman is a talented player but there's every chance he'll opt against signing a new deal at Blackburn Rovers this summer and look to move on.

He spent time on loan at Shrewsbury Town last season and did well so it's clear at League One level he looks particularly comfortable.

A number of attacking players like Liam Millar and Ian Maatsen have left in recent weeks so there's an opening for someone like Chapman.

Dan Crowley has been released by Birmingham City and he's now looking for a new club.

He's a technically gifted player and a lot was actually expected of him at Blues but it just simply hasn't worked for him and perhaps a drop into League One would be a move that could work.

Nigel Adkins wants to bring in some younger players and bring the average age of the Charlton squad down so there's a good case to suggest someone like Crowley would be on his radar this summer.

The player himself will be itching to prove a point, too.

There's every chance Elliott Bennett leaves Blackburn Rovers this summer and a player of his leadership and standing will surely be on the radar of many clubs.

Charlton's right-back situation is an interesting one. It seems pretty clear that Adkins preferred Adam Matthews over Chris Gunter yet it is the former who could leave this summer with his contract up in the coming weeks.

Having said that, the need for another right-back could be clear for the Addicks and so Bennett is potentially a player worth consideration.

Hakeeb Adelakun is a good player with talent, it just did not work out for him at Bristol City and he's now looking for a new club.

He's impressed in the lower tiers of the EFL before and a step into League One to a big club like Charlton could be the making of him.

He's only 24 so he's got plenty of years to get things going once more and under a manager like Nigel Adkins you could still see him flourishing.

He's from London, and might just fancy a return to more familiar territory.

Henri Lansbury is another to have been released by Bristol City and could be worth a punt - though you have to wonder what sort of wages he may ask for given he was at Aston Villa not so long ago.

He's got quality and if he can prove himself to Nigel Adkins he could be a really shrewd addition at League One level, it's just whether Charlton want to take him on.

Jake Forster-Caskey is going to be missing for a fair portion of the start of next season by the looks of things so a player like Lansbury with similar levels of class and guile in midfield might not be a bad idea.

Jon Toral is a busy player that gets about the pitch well and can often spot a pass.

He's been released by Birmingham City and is a player that could bring a lot to a club like Charlton as they aim for promotion next season.

He's worked with Nigel Adkins before having spent a few years as a player at Hull City and, though the Charlton boss won't just want to bring in old faces for the sake of knowing them, it would make sense for him to use a few contacts where he can.

With Shinnie and Pratley leaving the midfield, there's certainly room for Toral too.

Alex Pritchard has left Huddersfield Town and he'll be wanting to move somewhere that he can get his career back on track.

He's a good player, but with the Terriers he never really managed to show it and under Carlos Corberan his appearances were irregular at best.

Nigel Adkins will want to sign hungry players that are eager to prove themselves as Charlton eye a promotion challenge - perhaps Pritchard is one that he could consider.
