Everton have been aggressive spenders in recent years - especially after Farhad Moshiri bought a controlling stake in the club.

The Iranian's plans haven't really come to fruition just yet, but European football - maybe even the Champions League - could be on the cards next season if the Toffees have a strong end to the campaign.

There have been some absolute horror signings down the years though - let's take a look at nine flops that failed to make it at Goodison Park.

Kroldrup arrived at Goodison Park in the summer of 2005 for £5 million from Udinese - and played just once in the Premier League for the club.

He could not adapt to the English game and in January 2006, just 31 days after his Toffees debut, Kroldrup departed back to Italy for Fiorentina.

After a prolific half-season with Lokomotiv Moscow, Niasse was signed by Everton in January 2016 for £13.5 million - but he was never up to the standard required.

The Senegal striker did have a good run in the 2017-18 season, scoring eight times in 22 games, but for all his efforts he was not a good player and he's now at Huddersfield in the Championship.

Welsh midfielder Davies was a dependable player for Tottenham but was by no means a regular when Everton picked him up in 2005.

The deal could have risen to £4 million based on appearances, but he was quite poor for the Toffees and after just 18 months he left for Fulham, where he had a bit more success than on Merseyside.

One of the players that Roberto Martinez brought to Goodison Park in 2013, Alcaraz was only a free transfer but he wasn't ever good enough for Everton.

The Paraguayan played just 14 Premier League games before being released after his two year contract expired - a pretty pointless signing.

A player who was a colossus for Swansea, Williams didn't have quite the same impact for Everton after signing for £12 million in 2016.

Williams was a regular starter in his first season but he wasn't of the quality that the club needed for their European battles, and after just two seasons he was farmed out on loan to the Championship before leaving permanently in 2019.

One of the expensive ones on this list, Klaassen cost the club a £23.6 million transfer fee when arriving in 2017 from Ajax.

Whilst Klaassen may have excelled in the Eredivisie, the Premier League was a different kettle of fish, and in the end he played just seven times in the top flight and left the club after just a season, with the Toffees recouping £12 million of the money they originally paid.

Sandro wasn't exactly expensive at £5.2 million - he was a cheap punt from Malaga having scored 14 goals in La Liga the season prior.

He never took to the Premier League though, making just eight appearances in his first season and then he never played again for the club - he's now back in Spain with Huesca.

Talk about blowing a lot of money on a whole load of nothing - Bolasie is still contracted to the club until the summer after penning a five-year deal in 2016, Everton paying Crystal Palace £25 million for him.

Bolasie suffered a bad injury early on in his Everton career which may have been a catalyst for future poor performances, and he's been out on loan ever since 2018.

Van der Meyde was supposed to be a technically-gifted winger and he joined Everton in August 2005, but problems plagued his career at the Toffees.

The Dutchman spent four years at the club but only made 20 league appearances and must go down as a real failure of a signing.
