Charlton Athletic will be hoping to have a productive summer transfer window this year regardless of what division they are going to be in for 2021/22.

Thomas Sandgaard is now at the helm and it seems as though he is willing to dip into his wallet where he can and add to the squad, so time will tell as to who they end up targeting and signing.

The likes of Andrew Shinnie, Ryan Inniss, Ben Watson and Chris Gunter have all been brought in and played a part this year - with wages the main expense - and we may see this summer some bigger fees getting spent.

Addicks fans will hope, though, that the new arrivals prove more successful that the following nine players who, put simply, flopped during their time at The Valley.

Indeed, here we are taking a closer look at nine arrivals that really did struggle in SE7 - see if you agree with our following choices...

Reza Ghoochannejhad is first on our list of players that simply flopped during their time at Charlton Athletic.

The Iranian striker scored five goals in his 42 appearances for the Addicks with loan spells coming into play during his time at The Valley.

He moved to clubs in Kuwait and Qatar during his time in south east London before securing a permanent move back to one of his former clubs in the Netherlands; Heerenveen.

He remains over the North Sea, currently playing for PEC Zwolle where he arrived in 2019 after a brief stint at APOEL.

Djimi Traore is up next.

The French defender earned cult hero status to an extent at Liverpool for somehow being a part of a Champions League-winning side.

The Frenchman had his moments, for sure, but also had a lot of mistakes in him - a classic own goal against Burnley for the Reds the pick of the bunch.

Even so, Charlton fans hoped that his experience at the top level would help them along but, ultimately, that is far from what happened.

He was at Charlton for one season and left after eleven league appearances.

Up next is Amdy Faye.

The powerful midfielder actually joined on the same day as Traore in the summer transfer window of 2006 and so perhaps it's no surprise that he too had a tough time at The Valley.

He made 29 appearances between 2006 and 2008 for Charlton, moving to Stoke City.

He never really recaptured the form he showed at Portsmouth between 2003 and 2005.

Tahar El Khalej is up next on our list of Charlton players who flopped after arriving.

He made over 50 appearances in the league for Southampton between 2000 and 2003 but his arrival at Charlton that same latter year marked a downturn for him.

He featured just three times in the league for the Addicks, playing for them for just half a season.

He was coming to the end of his career and, unfortunately, it showed a great deal.

In his better years, he made close to 60 appearances for the Moroccan national team through the 90s.

Goalkeeper Yohann Thuram-Ulien is up next on our list.

He arrived on loan at Charlton in 2014 after coming over from Belgium and Standard Liege but made just four appearances in the league for the Addicks before heading back in short order.

He never looked too comfortable playing in goal for the club and once saved a shot from long range with his feet, which rather set the tone for his short-lived Addicks career.

He moved to Le Havre in 2016 and is now at French side Amiens having signed for them in 2020.

Salim Kerkar made 24 league appearances for Charlton in 2012/13 and scored just the one league goal.

He arrived from Rangers where he had made just 18 league appearances between 2010 and 2012 so it was obviously a bit of a gamble that the Addicks were taking.

Indeed, it was one that they quickly decided to cut their losses on with him seeing his contract terminated at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, sending him into a period without a club.

In 2014 he wound up at Beroe who play in Bulgaria and has since played for Vereya, a lower-tier side in Bulgaria, and Kuwaiti side Burgan SC.

Mark McCammon's time at Charlton really did not work out how he would have liked.

He arrived in 1999 but stayed for just a year, making four league appearances in that time and failing to register a goal for the Addicks as a striker.

He spent time on loan at Swindon during his spell on Charlton's books before moving to Brentford in 2000 where he had slightly better success.

He scored ten league goals during a three-year spell that saw him make over 70 league appearances whilst spell at Millwall, Doncaster and Gillingham all followed later in his career.

At every side, though, he was unfortunately not the most prolific.

Mike Small's loan spell at Charlton was particularly forgettable.

He arrived in the 1993/94 season after playing a fair amount for West Ham United in the years prior but he struggled to make any impact at all for the Addicks and was soon moving on again before really showing any of what he might be able to offer.

In 1994 he BK Haken in Sweden for a very short spell, too, before playing for the likes of Stevenage Borough and Sligo Rovers at the end of his career.

He has also been a coach in non-league football since hanging up his boots.

Pawel Abbott arrived as a bustling striker in 2010 after a decent record at Oldham Athletic where he had scored 13 league goals in 39 league games.

A decent enough strike-rate, then, and that got Charlton to take the plunge but he never managed to replicate such form at The Valley.

He scored one goal in the league in the 2010/11 season from 17 league appearances and, naturally, was soon out of the door on the back of that showing.

He moved to Ruch Chorzów in 2011 and would spend time at various other clubs over in Poland in the years afterwards.
