Over the years, there have been plenty of players who have been signed by Cardiff City.

As you would expect to be the case with any club, some of those players have certainly had a bigger impact in the Welsh capital than others.

But while certain individuals ranging from Peter Whittingham to Sean Morrison, and many more, will always be remembered as inspired and lucrative signings that undoubtedly paid off for the Bluebirds, there are plenty of recruits for whom things most certainly did not work out during their time with the side from Wales.

Here, we've decided to take a look at nine of those players who quite simply flopped in emphatic style during their time with Cardiff, for one reason or another, and there are likely to be some individual who those of a Bluebirds persuasion may not - or would prefer not to - remember.

But how many of these do you actually recognise.

We start this list with Fan Zhiyi, who joined Cardiff from Shanghai International (now Beijing Renhe) in November 2002.

The defender became the first player from China to represent the Bluebirds, although it was not something he would do regularly, with Zhiyi - who had previously played in the English game with Crystal Palace - making just six league appearances for Cardiff.

Having failed to convince Zhiyi left the Welsh capital just a year later in 2003, going on to play for Buler Rangers in Hong Kong and Shanghai Zobon in China, where he is now employed by another of his former clubs, Shanghai Shenhua as assistant manager.

Having impressed during the early stages of his career in his native Finland, Cardiff moved to bring Koskela to the Welsh capital in 2005.

However, the midfielder failed to make any sort of an impact, making just three appearances in all competitions for the club, all of which came from the bench, and he left in 2006 to join Greek side Illisakos, failing to make even a single appearance during his time there.

Koskela then spent time playing in both Norway and his native Finland, where he has now been manager of HJK Helsinki since May 2019, guiding the club to the Finnish title last season.

Redan was loaned to Cardiff from Dutch top-flight side Willem II in 2007, after an incident that had seen him headbutt a teammate during a cup match with his parent club.

The striker failed to even make that sort of impact during his time in the Welsh capital, making just two appearances for the Bluebirds, both of which came from the bench, before returning to Holland, where he was released by Willem II at the end of that season.

Following his release, Redan went on to play for several other clubs in the Netherlands but failed to really settle at any of them, making just a handful of appearances for each before his senior playing career came to an end in 2011.

With both Peter Enckleman and Tom Heaton absent through injury, Cardiff signed Konstantopoulos on loan from Coventry in 2009, just days after a similar temporary stint with Swansea.

However, Konstantopoulos struggled badly to do the job he was brought in to do, making several errors that led to Cardiff conceding, despite the fact that he made just six appearances for the Bluebirds, who even brought in another 'keeper, Stuart Taylor on loan.

After returning to Coventry, Konstantopoulos left England in 2010, spending time in Greece with Kerkyra and AEK Athens, before returning with Middlesbrough in 2013, making over 100 appearances for 'Boro before dropping into non-league with Hartlepool and Thornaby in recent years.

Having impressed in a League Cup match for Dagenham and Redbridge against Cardiff in August 2009, the Bluebirds moved to sign the midfielder just a few weeks later.

However, Taiwo failed to make much of an impact in the Welsh capital, making just 12 league appearances across a three-year spell with the club - during which time he was also loaned back to Dagenham, as well as Leyton Orient - before leaving at the end of his contract in the summer of 2012.

Taiwo then dropped down the leagues, playing for the likes of Mansfield, Luton, Aldershot and Dover, and was most recently on the books of Faversham Town in the eighth-tier of English football.

Lappin joined Cardiff on an emergency loan from Norwich in November 2012, and was sent for two yellows cards on his debut for the Bluebirds.

Despite making just one more appearance during his loan spell, Lappin was then signed permanently by Cardiff in January 2013, but failed to add to his tally of two appearances for the Bluebirds, and was sent on loan to Sheffield United for the 2013/14 season, after which he was released by Cardiff upon the expiration of his contract.

The Scotland youth international then went on to play for the likes of St Johnstone, York and King's Lynn, and was most recently appointed as player/coach at ninth-tier Wroxham.

Cardiff broke their club transfer record to bring Cornelius to the Welsh capital in the summer of 2013, after an impressive season for the striker at Copenhagen in his native Denmark.

However, Cornelius' impact for the Bluebirds was less than negligible at best, with the striker failing to score in 11 appearances in all competitions as the club suffered an immediate relegation from the Premier League, before the striker returned to Copenhagen at the end of that season.

Perhaps surprisingly therefore, the striker is now on the books of Serie A promotion chasers Atalanta, albeit he is out on loan with struggling Parma.

Following Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League, Guerra was signed by the Bluebirds in the summer of 2014, with the then 31-year-old signing a three-year contract in the Welsh capital.

However, the Spaniard would make just three appearances for the Bluebirds before being loaned back to Spain in the 2015 January transfer window, when he joined Malaga on a temporary basis.

A longer term return to Spain then came just a year after Guerra's move to Cardiff, as the forward signed for Rayo Vallecano, where he spent the next four years before retiring in 2019, having made 93 appearances and scored 24 goals in total for the Madrid-based club.

Berget was signed for Cardiff by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2014, having previously worked under the now Manchester United boss during his time in charge of Molde in the duo's native Norway.

However, Berget's only start for the club came in a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Wigan, and his sole league appearance came as a late substitute in a 4-0 thrashing by Hull.

The striker was then loaned out to Celtic in the summer of 2014, and despite scoring twice in four league games for the Scottish giants, the striker saw his contract with Cardiff terminated in January 2015, just under a year after he had joined the club, with the 30-year-old now playing in Sweden with Malmo, where he has won three top-flight titles.
