Since becoming an established Premier League club, Brighton & Hove Albion have splashed a lot of cash on new talent in an attempt to stay in the top flight.

Some of it has been money well spent - the likes of Adam Webster and Neal Maupay have been expensive both worthwhile whilst you have the Tariq Lamptey's who have been cheap and brilliant.

What of the flops though? Let's look at nine of Albion's worst signings over the years.

Locadia was a huge purchase in January 2018 from PSV, with the club paying an initial £10 million with the potential for a further £5 million in add ons.

The Dutchman struggled to make an impact in his first half-season, and in 2018/19 he scored just twice in the league - he's now out on loan at MLS side Cincinnati FC.

The Iranian attacker was a club-record signing in 2018 when arriving from AZ Alkmaar - it was around a £17 million fee and Alireza had been prolific in Holland.

Unfortunately that form has never translated to the top flight in England - he's played just 43 times in the league in two-and-a-half years and he's restricted to playing a role from the bench nowadays.

Best's career was definitely on the down-turn when he arrived at the Seagulls on loan in 2015, and he made little impact during his time at the AMEX.

Best made 13 Championship appearances for the club, never being able to break his scoring duck before returning to Blackburn.

Agustien was a talented player with Swansea in the Premier League but he struggled massively with injuries, hence why he dropped into the Championship with Albion in 2013.

He suffered from the same fate on the south coast as well, making just 13 league appearances over two years before departing on a free.

Murphy was decent in his first season for Brighton, having scored six goals in 38 games, but he disappointed after that, scoring just twice the following season.

Rarely getting playing time in the Premier League with the club, Murphy departed for Rangers in 2018 and for what was expected goals wise he was quite underwhelming.

Colunga was brought in as the successor to the prolific Leonardo Ulloa - unfortunately for him he wasn't quite the bagsman like Ulloa was.

The Spaniard did play 17 league games for Albion in his first season but following Chris Hughton's appointment, he wasn't fancied and he left to return to Spain just a few months after signing.

O'Grady was ever-so slightly out of his depth at Albion, joining after a free-scoring season at Barnsley but he wasn't the scorer the club expected.

Netting just once in his first season, O'Grady soon found himself unfancied and played just three more times in the league for the club, departing for Chesterfield in 2017.

Paynter was a slightly bizarre loan signing for Albion in 2011 - he made very little impact for Leeds who then loaned him to their division rivals in the Seagulls.

The striker played 10 times on loan for Brighton and didn't score a single goal, a real puzzling deal indeed when they could've gotten someone much better.

Suttner was one of Brighton's first Premier League signings in 2017, but it became apparent soon enough that he wasn't that good.

He played 14 league games in his first season and after just one cup appearance in the 2018/19 campaign, he was shipped back off to Germany to Fortuna Dusseldorf - a waste of £4 million.
