Burnley have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign with the addition of Samuel Bastien.

Vincent Kompany, who is currently leading a complete change of approach from the Lancashire club, will be hoping that his new look Burnley side will be able to mount a promotion push.

Adding the likes of Scott Twine, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Luke McNally to his squad for the new season, this summer represents an opportunity for Kompany and Co. to build a sustainable, more youthful squad.

Bastien, 25, featured 28 times for Standard Liege last season, chipping in with a goal and an assist in that time, and whilst predominantly operating in a central midfield position, he was also tasked with playing slightly deeper and more advanced at times.

Whilst we wait for the new campaign to get underway, here, we take a look at Bastien's data from the 2021/22 season, using Wyscout, to better understand the type of player that Clarets can expect to see...

Attacking analysis

Bastien was deployed as an attacking midfielder on four occasions last season, whilst he was also played on the wing at one point.

Averaging 1.68 dribbles per 90, with a success rate that was just short of 60%, the midfielder also made 1.04 progressive runs per 90.

Engaging in 5.95 offensive duels per 90 during last season, he was successful in 39% of them.

Defensive assessment

Engaging in slightly fewer defensive duels per 90 (5.26), Bastien proved to be more successful here, winning over 55% of them.

Proving to be a player who can read the game well, the 25-year-old also chipped in with 2.22 interceptions per 90.

Averaging 3.36 loose ball duels per 90 during the 2021/22 campaign, Bastien's data suggests he can meet the demands of operating as an all-action kind of midfield operator.

Passing numbers

Making 29 attempted passes per 90, Bastien returns an impressive success rate of 87.6%, with an average of 6.76 of his passes going forward.

This is higher than the average numbers of backwards passes per 90 he made last season (5.31), showing signs of positivity and bravery when in possession.

Interestingly, Bastien's pass accuracy stayed beyond 80% when just regarding passes into the final third, proving to be extremely productive when in possession.
