Nottingham Forest continued their promising form with a 2-1 win over Birmingham City on Saturday that saw Aitor Karanka’s men extend their unbeaten run to four games.

The former Boro boss made major changes to his squad in January and after a slow start they are just beginning to see the benefits.

Karanka has gone with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation and seems to have healthy competition for places in various positions.

With only one place up front, there is a decision for the manager to make every week and Ben Brereton has established himself as the number nine in recent weeks.

The 18-year old has delivered several promising performances however he has only scored one goal in nine games under the new boss.

Therefore, with Daryl Murphy back after injury, Karanka may consider using the experienced Irishman against Norwich City.

Even though he has struggled since coming back into the fold, the 34-year old poses more of a goal threat than the teenager, as our graph shows.

He has scored seven times this season, from 24 appearances, compared to Brereton’s three in 25.

That’s also backed up with the shots per game, with Murphy getting off 2.4 efforts per game, compared to the youngster’s one.

However, with an 83.6% pass success compared to 69.8%, Brereton may be the better man to link up play, particularly with the talented footballers Forest have in attacking midfield.

Additionally, with 1.2 dribbles per game Brereton is a real threat when he gets running at the defence and that’s something that Murphy doesn’t offer at all.

All in all, they are different players and may suit different styles but Karanka will need to make his mind up as to who he wants to lead the line in the coming weeks.
