Nottingham Forest will be looking to right their wrongs and make a dramatic improvement in the Sky Bet Championship under Martin O’Neill next season.

Big things were expected of the Reds last season, they broke their transfer record, they kept hold of their star players, and brought in a total of 16 new players in the summer transfer window under Aitor Karanka.

Arriving on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion came Claudio Yacob - the Argentine joined the Reds to add competition to what was already a plethora of versatile midfielders at the club.

But the 31-year-old saw his game-time become limited after the departure of Karanka, making just three league appearances for Martin O’Neill towards the latter stages of the campaign.

O’Neill is expected to reshape his squad this summer, and with plenty of players remaining under contract following the conclusion of the 2018/19 campaign, there are likely to be plenty of outgoings.

Here, we take a look at whether Yacob has earned himelf a future at the City Ground...

A combative, tenacious midfielder, Yacob stood out next to the likes of Jack Colback in central midfield last season, and more than proved his worth after arriving from The Hawthorns.

In 16 appearances in the Championship, the 31-year-old made an average of 1.8 tackles per game, conceding 1.2 fouls per game at the same time.

The Argentine was a solid figure for the Reds when doing the dirty work in defence, making 1.5 clearances per game and winning 1.9 aerial duels per game, considering that he is under six-foot tall.

Going forward, Yacob was often at the heart of Forest's attacks, accruing a pass success rate of 83.5% from 32.9 passes per game.

Plenty of midfielders have stepped up to the plate since the arrival of O'Neill, with Ryan Yates and Pele coming to the forefront towards the end of the season.

But, with the latter looking unlikely to return to the City Ground after his loan spell from Monaco, Yacob will have to make his chance in the first-team count, if he is called upon next season.
