Brentford are another of those rogue sides looking to gate-crash the Championship top six on a reasonable budget.

Whilst many big clubs battle it out in the lower reaches, the likes of Millwall and Brentford defy the critics by assembling hard-working teams on relatively modest budgets, and earning the right to compete in the top ten.

When we say modest budgets, we don't mean shoe-string of course. Brentford signed Ryan Woods from Shrewsbury for around £1m. That's no small change, but it isn't a decadent sum either.

Now, after three solid seasons in the Championship, FLW looks at the 24-year old and asks: is he ready for a top-flight move?

One destination he might consider would be Newcastle United. Once dubbed 'the Ginger Pirlo' by Shrewsbury fans, his range of passing and midfield qualities have fired Brentford to within touching distance of joining the Toon Army in the top flight.

He's not particularly an attacking midfielder, just one goal and three assists testify to that.

He can get forward, those assists are down to a cute range of passes, but he isn't one you'll find making late runs into the box. He does the dirty work, breaking up play and distributing the ball to team mates. His willingness to lend a hand is evident, but it isn't his USP.

In 37 outings this season he averages 56.5 passes per game, a good solid number which proves a willingness to get on the ball and move it around. That would fit nicely with Newcastle's philosophy of playing football the right way.

He can move with it too, averaging 1.1 dribbles per game, but he's not the sort to go on mazy runs all the time. Ryan Woods is a safe footballer, a pass and move guy with a cool head and calmness on the ball.

His pass success rate is 82.7%, a figure that will surely impress anyone thinking of making a move for him.

With Jack Colback leaving St James Park this summer, Rafa Benitez could do worse than bring in the newer model, the young and hungry Woods who has worked tirelessly to get himself to where he is right now.

He looks primed and ready for that big chance.
