We’ve seen an exceptional run of form from Millwall in 2018, with Neil Harris’ side well in play-off contention ahead of the final two fixtures of the season.

Not many people would’ve predicted Millwall to be in this position, at this stage of the season, with Harris deserving huge credit.

Securing play-off football will still be difficult for Millwall, who face Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, two of their play-off rivals, between now and the end of the season, knowing they still probably need to pick up four points at the very least.

If play-off football isn’t achieved, Harris can’t afford to sit still in the summer, he must improve his playing squad ahead of next season and look to build on this year’s success.

One player we believe Millwall could target is the experienced Glenn Whelan, who is the latest feature of our FLW Spotlight:

Whelan is part of Villa’s squad going in search of promotion, making 32 appearances in the heart of midfield for Steve Bruce’s side.

The 34-year-old has registered a goal and an assist so far this season from holding midfield.

Defensively is where Whelan has been judged throughout his career, with the midfielder averaging 1.6 tackles per game this season.

In possession, the Irishman has also been impressive, making 42.7 passes on average per game, which come at a success rate of 80.6%.

The Verdict

Whelan’s impact at Villa Park this season has gone under the radar, with the experienced midfielder doing a good job in central midfield.

What he does in a holding midfield role is excellent, and there would be plenty of clubs in the race to sign him, should Villa opt to move him on.

Harris’ side would undoubtedly benefit from the experience the midfielder would bring.

Whelan would also benefit from having Millwall's energetic midfield around him heading into next season.
