Russell Martin joined Swansea City with the 2021/22 Championship season already underway so he'll be determined to make the most of his first full summer window at the South Wales club.

It always looked likely there would be a teething period at the Swansea.com Stadium as the squad got to grips with the pass-heavy brand of football that Martin favours and that's how it played out but things looked to be clicking for them in the latter months of the campaign.

A strong summer window will be needed to ensure that they can build on that progress and challenge higher up the table this season.

Former Swans boss Steve Cooper won promotion to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest via Sunday's play-off final, which brings the 2021/22 EFL season to an end.

With full focus now on preparations for next term and the transfer window opening later this month, we've outlined eight scenarios that might play out at Swansea...

Joel Piroe was something of a leftfield signing last summer but has proven a fantastic addition – finishing the 2021/22 campaign with 22 goals and six assists.

The 22-year-old's fast start in English football is likely to attract attention from elsewhere and though Martin has warned it will take "a huge sum of money" to prize him away this summer, Piroe's exit could materialise in the coming weeks.

That would be a blow but it would mean cash to invest in the squad.

Another summer 2021 arrival, Michael Obafemi took a little longer than Piroe to settle but finished the season in impressive style.

The former Southampton man bagged 12 goals for the Swans and has drawn links with a move back to the Premier League already.

Top flight clubs are understood to be interested in Obafemi after his strong finish to the season and the South Wales club may be open to letting him leave if a good enough offer comes in.

In terms of new arrivals, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise defender Matthew Sorinola is a candidate to make the switch to the Swansea.com Stadium.

Football League World exclusively revealed in April that the Martin was keen on a reunion with the 21-year-old, who left MK Dons to join the Belgian club in the summer.

Now our sources have indicated that the Swans face competition from Norwich City for the defender but his relationship with his former boss may help them win the race for his signature.

Few players from Swansea's past look better suited for Martin's style of play than Joe Allen and it appears the Welsh midfielder could be set to return.

The Swans are reportedly keen to bring him back to South Wales this summer, with Allen out of contract at Stoke City.

Stoke are in talks with the Wales international as well but the temptation of returning to his boyhood club could be too much to resist.

Cyrus Christie proved a smart January signing, joining on loan from Fulham, and with his contract running out at Craven Cottage, it's no surprise that Swans boss Martin confirmed they were interested in signing him permanently once he becomes a free agent.

However, the 29-year-old has revealed he's keen to explore his options overseas and he will likely have offers.

That may make things difficult for the Championship club and mean that they're unable to bring him back this summer.

Midfielder Flynn Downes has enjoyed a brilliant debut season in South Wales – becoming a regular fixture and attracting attention from elsewhere.

Downes has been linked with a move to Leeds United, who are now preparing for another season in the Premier League after avoiding relegation.

Should they come calling, it may be hard for the Swans to hold onto the 23-year-old and for the player to resist the chance to move to the top flight.

MK Dons have rejected Swansea offers for centre-back Harry Darling in the past and it would be no surprise to see Martin reignite his interest in a reunion.

The defender enjoyed a fantastic season in League One, helping his club to the play-offs and earning a place in the Team of the Season, but as his side fell short of promotion, the door is open for a Championship club to swoop.

Whether Swansea can afford such a deal remains to be seen.

If it's centre-backs that Martin wants, then Gillingham's Jack Tucker could be an option.

The 22-year-old is out of contract with the Gills and is too good to play League Two football next season meaning he will surely be on the move this summer.

Journalist Alan Nixon has reported Swansea are interested but with Blackpool and Hull City both keen, they'll have their work cut out winning the race for his signature.
