There is plenty of uncertainty at QPR at the moment, with Mark Warburton's replacement still yet to be appointed.

It's been more than a month since the R's confirmed their manager would be departing and though plenty of candidates have been linked with the job, concrete progress does not seem to have been made.

That's limiting their preparations for the 2022/23 Championship campaign, which is the last thing the west London club need as they look to try to hold onto some momentum from the Warburton era.

The R's came close to a play-off place in the final season of his tenure and will do well to go one better next term.

If they're to do that, work will need to be done on their squad over the next few months and with the 2021/22 campaign now officially done, here are eight transfer scenarios that might play out at the Championship club...

With Charlie Austin gone and Andre Gray's loan spell over, they need some forward reinforcements and Wigan marksman Will Keane has been linked.

According to The Sun, QPR, Sheffield United and Watford are all keen on the 29-year-old after he bagged 27 goals for the Latics last in 2021/22 – winning the League One golden boot as he helped claim the league title and promotion.

Keane has just a year left on his contract and is said to be valued at around £1 million so we might see the R's make a move for him.

Jordy de Wijs spent the second half of last season on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf but returns to the west London club with two years still left on his deal.

A new manager may offer him new opportunities but it would not be a surprise to see the 27-year-old depart this summer.

The Dutchman was a regular fixture for the Bundesliga 2 side before suffering an injury and may feel his future is better served elsewhere – with his departure likely to give the new boss more financial flexibility.

Another League One goal machine that QPR have been linked with, Ross Stewart's goals were integral in helping Sunderland finally get back to the Championship.

Sheffield United, QPR, and Rangers are all said to be keen on the Scot ( The Mirror (26/05: page 62)) but you feel it will be hard for the R's to win the race for him.

They don't have the sort of budgets that Rangers or the Blades do while Sunderland will be desperate to keep hold of the towering striker ahead of their first season back in the second tier.

With question marks over the futures of Yoann Barbet and de Wijs and Dion Sanderson returning to Wolves, the R's need to bolster their defensive options before the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

Signing Daniel Ballard, a target as per the Evening Standard, would certainly help them do that. The 22-year-old centre-back was hugely impressive while on loan at Millwall last season and is not short of suitors this summer.

The Gunners are said to be open to letting him leave permanently and QPR could be the club that benefits.

With his loan spell at Ipswich Town done, Macauley Bonne has returned to Loftus Road and still has a year left on his contract.

Warburton's exit may give him hope of re-establishing himself at the Championship club but League One looks more his level.

A fresh start looks as though it could be best for both the player and the club so with that in mind, we can expect the R's to try and offload him over the next few months.

Murphy Mahoney stepped up when called upon during the R's goalkeeping injury crisis in 2021/22 and showed some real promise under difficult circumstances.

However, it won't benefit the 20-year-old shot-stopper to be sat behind Seny Dieng next term and a loan move could well be the best thing for his development.

A lower table League One or a League Two side looks the most likely level for Mahoney after spells in non-league during the 2021/22 campaign.

If defensive reinforcements are the order of the day for QPR, then returning for Michael Hector could be an option.

The centre-back has been released by Fulham and played second fiddle at Craven Cottage during 2021/22 but we've seen him thrive at Championship level in the past.

The R's were linked with a move for Hector in January and should be on their radar now he's a free agent – though it may not be cheap to land him.

QPR need to sign at least two new forwards before the start of the 2022/23 campaign and as they aren't going to have a huge amount of cash to spend, turning to the loan market would make sense.

Troy Parrott enjoyed an impressive season on loan at MK Dons – scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists – and it is said that Tottenham could be open to loaning him out again.

Director of football Les Ferdinand should look to take advantage of his links to Spurs by bringing Parrott to Loftus Road.
