Charlton Athletic are heading into a very important summer transfer window to ensure that they do not underperform to the extent they did in 2021/22.

The general consensus was that Johnnie Jackson had performed admirably since stepping into the dugout with the club four points adrift inside the relegation zone in late October.

However, the new AFC Wimbledon manager was promptly dismissed at the end of the season with the club still looking for a replacement, entering the final fortnight before pre-season tomorrow.

Conor Washington's release was very surprising and the Northern Ireland international has since completed a move to newly promoted Rotherham United, ahead of their Championship survival bid in 2022/23.

A lot of work needs to be done on and off the pitch for the Addicks to be competitive in League One, as of the end of next month, and none of those strides have been completed while their divisional rivals are bolstering their pushes.

Here, we have taken a look at eight transfer scenarios that might play out at Charlton now 2021/22 has ended...

A Josh Davison exit looks to be on the cards this summer.

The club exercised their option to extend the striker's contract, but they may have been to ensure they can recoup a transfer fee for his services.

The 22-year-old impressed on loan at Swindon Town in the second half of the season and could be of interest to other League Two clubs ahead of next term.

Davison's pace and physicality is more effective in the fourth tier though he has shown himself as a capable squad player in League One before.

Sean Clare came second in the club's Player of the Season award and could be on the radar of some Championship clubs.

The versatile 25-year-old has shown that he is equally comfortable operating in a back three as in central midfield, and with just one year remaining on his contract, a club with more realistic promotion ambitions or one already in the second tier could take the plunge.

Clare's performance levels increased unrecognisably under Jackson, many players would have disappointed to see him leave.

Corey Blackett-Taylor thrived in a left wing back role in the final few months of the season, further demonstrating Jackson's capable tactical nous, and the former Aston Villa youngster will have caught the eye of clubs in higher places.

The 24-year-old's fitness record has been very inconsistent in the infancy of his senior career, and that may see clubs hold off until the January transfer window to pursue Blackett-Taylor.

The former England youth international's pace is very difficult to defend against in the third tier.

Ben Garner is set to be appointed Charlton's new manager, as of the South London Press last week, after guiding Swindon Town to a play-off final in League Two.

The 42-year-old did not perform how he would have liked previously at Bristol Rovers in the third tier and was appointed by the Robins in a dire situation on and off the pitch last summer.

With pre-season edging closer and other sides being far more organised, though Garner is not an inspiring appointment for the Addicks, an appointment itself would be welcomed at this stage.

With Jayden Stockley and Chuks Aneke the only senior strikers at the club, if Davison departs, Daniel Kanu could see more regular first team opportunities next season given the lack of squad depth.

The 17-year-old had a sensational 2021/22 campaign, developing from an U17 regular to a key member of the U23 side and making his first team debut.

With squad building behind where it should be, Kanu could be heavily involved in pre-season with the chance to convince a new manager of his credentials in League One.

Dom Telford is an option on a free after his deal ended at Newport County.

The 25-year-old had never been prolific before this season but his instinct and poaching ability saw him pick-up the golden boot in League Two.

The Addicks' recruitment process is less than sophisticated, to be kind, and therefore Telford's weight of goals last season could be enough to make him a target.

The Valley would be a glamorous step up in terms of a change of scenery compared to Rodney Parade.

Charlton have been recycling old flames in the last season or so.

They failed to convince Chuks Aneke to sign a new contract, then bought him back the following January and Jonathan Leko returned to the club on loan from Birmingham City at the back end of last summer.

Naby Sarr's contract is up at Huddersfield Town this summer, and if the mistake-prone defender does not receive Championship interest, Thomas Sandgaard could see it as a positive PR move to re-sign the 28-year-old.

Ben Purrington has been offered a new contract in SE7, with his original deal expiring this summer, however no confirmation has been communicated in regards to the negotiations.

The versatile left sider has played over 100 games for the club and would not be hard pushed to find a move to another League One club this summer, potentially one with a greater chance of achieving promotion.
