Bristol City will go into the summer looking to replenish their squad in a major way - and they've already started with their business.

Nigel Pearson was brought in to replace Dean Holden in February 2021 but the 2021-22 campaign was the first chance we got to see the Robins with a squad he helped to create.

Despite signing the likes of Rob Atkinson and Matty James, there wasn't much further room for activity, meaning that City spent the season with a largely similar squad to the campaign prior.

In the end, it was a 17th-placed finish for Bristol City in the Championship last season, with the goalscoring prowess of Andreas Weimann not compensating for a leaky defence.

Pearson has already made some early transfer moves though before the window has even opened in a bid to freshen his options ahead of 2022-23, with versatile Oxford United midfielder Mark Sykes arriving, as well as another player who can play in multiple positions in Luton Town's Kal Naismith - the latter is being viewed by many as a major coup.

What other transfer business could occur now the Championship season is officially over following the conclusion of the play-offs? Let's take a look.

Shipping goals was a real problem for the Robins last season - in the league they conceded 77 times, a figure which was the third-worst in the entire league and it failed to level out when Timm Klose was signed to add more experience.

There is no guarantee that the Swiss centre-half will sign a new deal at Ashton Gate, so he could be replaced by Davies, who Pearson is keen to recruit to add more experience to his back-line.

At 37 years old, Davies has showed no signs of slowing down, appearing in all 46 Championship matches for Derby County this past season after recovering from a serious achilles injury and was one of the league's top defenders.

There's still a chance he could remain at Pride Park, but there's an equal chance he could join City.

Bristol City are no stranger to receiving sizeable bids for their young stars, with both Adam Webster and Bobby Reid in particular departing Ashton Gate for big fees.

You get the feeling that another significant sale may be on the way, and teenage sensation Scott could be the one to leave.

Both Leeds United and Tottenham have watched the 'Guernsey Grealish' in the latter stages of the 2021-22 season, with his performances in his first year as a regular first-team player being particularly impressive.

If high seven-figure offers arrive at the table of Pearson for the 18-year-old, then a big decision will need to be made.

Pearson made additions to his midfield last summer in Andy King and Matty James, but both of those are the wrong side of 30 and some younger, fresher legs will be needed next season.

City have been linked with a move for Reading midfielder Rinomhota, who has been at the Royals since 2015 after joining from non-league AFC Portchester.

Now 25 years old, Rinomhota is set to be a free agent after 125 league appearances for the club if he doesn't accept their fresh contract offer and even though some would perhaps see it as a sideways move, it looks like a realistic player to target for the Robins.

Rinomhota could be desperately needed if City cash in on Massengo, who is attracting interest from both OGC Nice and Leicester City this summer.

The 20-year-old Frenchman hasn't brought much in the way of goals and assists since his 2019 move from Monaco, but what he has brought is flair and energy in midfield, and there's been some spell-binding performances in the last 12 months.

With one year left on his contract, Massengo will most-likely be cashed in on should he not extend his time at Ashton Gate - it almost feels inevitable that he won't be in the red shirt of City next season.

A position that depth is needed in is at right wing-back - George Tanner was brought in from Carlisle last summer but players like Alex Scott had to cover him in an unnatural position when he was injured.

City may have found the perfect solution in the form of Wilson, who has had a break-out season for nearby Gloucestershire outfit Forest Green Rovers in League Two, scoring three times and assisting 13 goals in their promotion-winning campaign.

Out of contract at The New Lawn, Wilson is destined for a move to the Championship and would only costa small compensation fee, and he looks to be exactly the player the club need - it has been reported that talks are underway to make that happen.

Inconsistent during his time at City, Antoine Semenyo exploded into life midway through the 2021-22 season, which led to some late January transfer interest.

Nottingham Forest's bid was rebuffed on deadline day but now they've secured Premier League football, they could return with a fresh offer.

Celtic are also believed to hold a long-standing interest in the forward, who scored eight goals and provided 12 assists last season - like Scott and Massengo he's another that could be sold for the right price, with Nigel Pearson admitting as much himself.

Palmer arrived at Ashton Gate in 2019 - initially on loan from Chelsea before making the move permanent - with a ton of promise, but he's failed to live up to the hype.

The midfielder's career has somewhat stagnated recently, and with a year left on his contract at the club it appears he has no future and hasn't for some time.

A way out looks to be on the horizon though - Cardiff City have held talks to sign the 25-year-old permanently in the last week and although negotiations ended up breaking down, the Jamaica international looks closer than ever to exiting and finding a new home, wherever that may be.

It could be a straight swap of-sorts at Ashton Gate - Palmer may be heading to South Wales and coming in the opposite direction could very well be a former player in Pack.

The midfielder arrived from Cheltenham Town in 2013 and two years later played a key part in City's promotion to the Championship, regularly starting for the club before his 2019 move to Cardiff.

After three years in the Welsh capital, Pack has been released after not featuring since January and Pearson is believed to hold an interest in bringing the 31-year-old back to the club - it's a deal that shouldn't be hard to do if all parties are keen.
