Bolton had a superb return to League One in the last campaign, soaring towards the play-off places before ultimately having to settle for a spot in the top half of the table.

Considering they had only just snagged a promotion back into the third tier, it wasn't too bad of a return for the Wanderers in that division. Ian Evatt did an excellent job in leading the side and they very nearly had their eyes on a consecutive promotion.

They were unable to achieve that feat though and had to watch on as rivals Wigan went up as title winners. They will want similar success next time out and Evatt will have a task on his hands to sort the squad out this summer and ensure they are up to the task.

With that in mind then, here are eight transfer scenarios that might play out for the club over the summer.

One name that could be mentioned rather frequently when it comes to Bolton this summer is Marlon Fossey and whether or not he will end up back at the club again.

He played 16 times for the club from January onwards and really excelled in the third tier with the side. He impressed plenty at Wanderers and it is no surprise then that the club want him back if they can get him.

However, as well as their interest in the defender, it appears as though he has now caught the eye of teams higher up the Football pyramid. That means it could now be even more difficult for Ian Evatt to convince him to return.

Bolton will be desperate to get a deal done - and they'll have to see off plenty of competition now to do so.

Cole Stockton is another name that has previously been linked with the side who could be available this summer.

The striker has been excellent for Morecambe in the last campaign, bagging 23 goals in just 44 league games. It means he has been one of the hottest strikers in the third tier - and he is now attracting plenty of interest, with his current side struggling towards the bottom of the table.

Bolton have been mentioned as one of those sides that could like to snap the player up. Again though, they will face plenty of competition for his signature and it means Ian Evatt will have to do his best to convince Stockton that it is worth joining the Wanderers over anyone else.

The player can guarantee goals though - and Bolton would love to get a deal for him over the line.

One player that could be heading the other way though is Oladapo Afolayan.

After playing 44 times for the club in the league and bagging 12 goals with four assists, the player has emerged as one of the brightest talents in League One. He certainly looks like he has bags of potential and with the player unable to help his team climb into the Championship, he could now be snapped up by a team elsewhere.

There are clubs with higher current standing that are desperate to sign him now too. Rangers in Scotland are one side that have been mentioned as potential suitors for the player and the fact they can offer title-chasing football (and potential European action to boot) it would be a hard prospect for him to turn down.

Afolayan then might have only just burst onto the scene with Bolton - but he could soon be off already.

If the winger did depart the League One outfit, then one name that has been mentioned as a potential signing that could replace him is Tom Barkhuizen.

The winger/forward has been released by Preston, with the Championship side deciding not to offer the player fresh terms at Deepdale. Instead, he will be searching for a new club when his contract runs out - and that means he would be available on a free transfer.

His level of experience and ability to get forward and score goals has meant he is now on the radar of Bolton. Like with every other target they have this summer, they won't be alone in wanting the former Morecambe man. Rotherham and Derby have also been linked, so it could be a transfer tug-of-war to sign him.

Bolton though have at least thrown their hat into the ring - and could launch a move for him in the coming weeks.

A name that will be familiar to Bolton and their fans is James Trafford - and there is every chance they could land him for another season next time out.

He ended up being the club's regular shot-stopper during his loan stint and impressed many with his presence in goal and his ability to keep out the opposition. He likely wouldn't be allowed to leave on a permanent basis but another short-term move could be an option.

Bolton definitely seem keen to have the player back again and it looks like it is a possibility they will once again explore during this offseason. If they can land him again, then it would be another coup for the Wanderers this summer.

They might eventually face competition for his signature but for now, Evatt will be hopeful that he can do business for the player once more.

Nathan Delfouneso could manage only eleven league appearances and no goals for Bolton during the last campaign and it looks like he will now be heading for pastures new.

The forward will see his deal run out this summer and his club have not taken up the option to keep him in League One. Instead, they are now prepared to let him leave on a free transfer at the end of the month and will be moving on from the striker.

The 31-year-old then will have to find himself a new team - and right now, there hasn't been much concrete interest in the player. However, considering his level of experience and the fact that he has bagged goals throughout the Football League, it would be surprising to see him not find a new club during the summer.

Bolton though is not where his future lies - and it will be interesting to see where his next challenge is.

Another player that could potentially end up out of the exit door this summer - whether permanently or on a loan deal - is Joel Dixon.

Bolton have offered fresh terms to Luke Hutchinson, who also plays in goal at the club and they do have Matthew Alexander to boot. Throw in the fact that rumours also remain rife that they want James Trafford to return to League One with them and there might not be room for Dixon in the side this campaign.

Considering his age, they might not want to let go of him on a permanent basis. Instead, a short-term one could suit them more but it wouldn't be surprising to see Bolton decide to put the player's name out there and see if anyone is interested.

There is no official interest as of yet but it could be a story that develops as other business starts to get done by the club.

One final bit of transfer business at Bolton that you might need to keep an eye on involves Adam Senior.

The player has been offered a new contract at the club, with his deal set to run out this summer. He didn't feature much for the Wanderers in the league this campaign, managing only two appearances, and instead had to make do with loan moves for first-team action.

He is clearly highly regarded by the side though, with the team offering him a new contract in order to keep him there. They must see a future for him and fancy him in their first-team at some point. But will he sign the new terms? Or will he try and find more permanent action elsewhere instead?

If he does sign a new deal too, will he be shipped out again? Or will he end up playing more of a part in their first-team in the next campaign? This and more will likely be answered during the summer transfer window.
