Blackburn Rovers looked like they could be on course for a Championship promotion this season - but those dreams fizzled out and the side instead had to settle for a spot just outside of the play-off places.

Now, it'll be a summer of change for the second tier side.

Tony Mowbray has left his role as manager and a new face will have to come in and stamp his own mark on the club going forward - and potentially take them back into the Premier League.

Rovers are yet to decide on the individual they want to take them forward, with two candidates in Carlos Carvalhal and Daniel Farke now out of the running - one has a new job and the other is in talks with a club in Germany.

A squad reshuffling is on the cards under a new boss - and that could mean plenty of incomings and outgoings at Ewood Park as the summer transfer window begins to open its doors.

Here then, are eight potential transfer scenarios that could play out at Blackburn.

The first, and arguably biggest, piece of transfer news that could impact Blackburn this summer and really kick in to full swing now the season is finished is the battle over the signature of Ben Brereton-Diaz.

The forward has been in scintillating form for the Championship side this past season, and it was his goals that helped drag Rovers up towards the play-off spots in the first place.

He was quieter towards the back end of the season after an injury but a return of 22 goals in 37 league matches is not too shabby at all.

These showings have only led to interest from the Premier League, with clubs from West Ham to Brighton all linked with the forward - even Sevilla in Spain have seemingly been keeping tabs on the young forward ahead of a potential deal in the summer transfer window.

The good news for Blackburn is that by extending his contract as they have means they will not lose the player on the cheap if they do decide to sell him.

The big question over his future though is will he stay on with Rovers and help them seal that elusive promotion or will he be tempted elsewhere?

According to TEAMtalk, Rovers are one of a number of Championship clubs looking at Union Saint Gilloise left-back Matthew Sorinola this summer.

The 21-year-old joined the Belgian outfit from MK Dons last summer, but struggled for regular game-time at the club owned by Brighton & Hove Albion custodian Tony Bloom.

Potentially seeking a move back to England, Sorinola also has interest from Norwich City and Swansea, but with Harry Pickering's form in the second half of the season for Rovers being inconsistent, Sorinola could provide some welcome competition - providing Rovers stump up the necessary fee.

Darragh Lenihan has yet to be tied down to a new deal with Blackburn and amidst all the uncertainty surrounding the club right now, there is every chance he could be let go.

The player has been impressive for Rovers this season and the last and it has even led to him becoming the club captain at Ewood Park.

Still, he could be tempted away over the transfer window, with both West Brom and Middlesbrough prepared to try and tempt him away from Rovers.

Blackburn fans will not want to see him leave and if they want to have any chance of gunning for a promotion again next season, then a deal for the player is a must.

However, the Baggies and Boro could both try and lure him away with the prospect of a potential promotion tilt.

Either way, his future remains unclear and that could mean the defender heads out the exit door during the offseason.

Another player who has an uncertain future is Ryan Nyambe.

The 24-year-old has been another mainstay in the Blackburn squad this season but his deal is coming to an end and no fresh terms have been agreed as of yet.

That means that unless a deal is agreed soon, he could leave for nothing just before the summer window opens.

There would no doubt be plenty of suitors desperate to snap up his signature if he does become available but Rovers will not want it to get that far.

If they have their way, then the defender will stay at Ewood Park and the supporters will be happy with that no doubt.

If the club can't reach an agreement though, then who knows where his future will lie?

One name who could be coming through the door at the club is Arsenal youngster Ryan Alebiosu.

They aren't the only club credited with an interest in his services though, with Bristol City also believed to be keen on the player.

That means the Robins could swoop in and steal him from under Blackburn's noses as they look to finish much higher up the division next season.

The 20-year-old right-back though looks like he could be a bright prospect and it could be a deal worth pursuing now, as it could pay off even more in the future.

If Rovers could land him, then they could have a player who could fill a right-back spot at their club for years to come.

It won't be easy to land him but if they can then it could be a shrewd acquisition.

Blackburn have another name on their list of targets in Ayoub Assal.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated at AFC Wimbledon and earlier this year was called up to train with the England under-20's squad and could perhaps be compared to Tyrhys Dolan in terms of the style of player he is.

It looks like Rovers will again have a battle on their hands to sign him, with Fulham also believed to be eyeing up a deal and Brentford wanting to take him into the Premier League as well.

Rovers could probably offer more football to him than both of those sides and that could be a selling point for the club.

Either way, it looks like there could be a tug-of-war between the clubs over the next few weeks as they all look to try and seal deals for the AFC Wimbledon man.

Blackburn aren't just looking to the lower leagues for Assal either, with reports emerging that they are mulling over a bid for Marcus Harness still.

The player, who currently plies his trade for Portsmouth, has only ever tried his luck in the Championship once before and that came with Burton.

He managed just ten league appearances with no starts and will want another attempt at trying to prove himself in the second tier if he can.

The 26-year-old has even admitted that he wants to be playing his football back in the Championship again and Rovers could be the club to give him that opportunity.

With Pompey probably not being too keen to sell him on after an 11-goal season, it could be an interesting situation that plays out here.

One player who could have his choice of clubs this summer - albeit on a short-term basis rather than a long-term one - is Tyler Magloire who spent time out on loan last season.

With Rovers keeping the player on at the club beyond this campaign, they now look likely to ship him out again in order to get him more regular football and to ensure he continues in his development.

Motherwell and Northampton are both keen, with both having had him on their books before too.

They might not be the only teams keen to do business as the weeks go on and with the player able to have his pick of where he gets to play, it could be intriguing to see his next steps in the world of football.
