Brentford moved up to second in the Sky Bet Championship after a convincing 2-0 win over Wigan on Saturday in a game that the Bees dominated for large parts.

Neal Maupay was the matchwinner, scoring twice to seal the points for Dean Smith's men at Griffin Park.

As well as that, his brace ensured he moved clear as the top scorer in the Championship. The French number nine now has seven goals and three assists to his name this season despite only playing five games.

That highlights the quality of the former Brest man, who after taking a year to settle into English football, now looks the real deal.

As our graphic shows, Maupay should've scored more on Saturday too, with the 22-year-old having eight shots on goal.

Most of those efforts were pretty clear-cut chances and he was actually rather wasteful, even though he netted twice.

Whilst that shows he has room for improvement, it also highlights how he transforms this Brentford side going forward.

He has excellent movement and thrives playing on the shoulder and looking for through balls from the technically gifted midfield behind him.

Maupay is a traditional striker too in the sense that he is always sniffing out opportunities and both goals against the Latics were scored from close range.

His passing stats weren't particularly great and he wasn't always involved in the game in terms of dropping deep or creating chances for others.

However, that's not what Smith or the Bees need. If they are to be successful, they require a clinical forward who can finish off the many chances that those creative midfielders provide.

And, Maupay showed once again on Saturday that he is that man and he could turn the nearly-men into real strong contenders this season if he maintains this electric form.
