Reading are heading towards a very difficult summer transfer window in Berkshire with a number of players' contracts running out.

The Royals will need to operate far more smartly in the transfer market this summer, to recruit under financial constraints and assemble a squad capable of staying up in the second tier next season.

Paul Ince's remit in 2022/23 will be to keep them in the Championship and possibly nothing more, having performed reasonably well to guide them to safety at the business end of the season.

The Royals have utilised the loan market very well in recent years and will have to make the most of those contacts to supplement their squad this summer.

It remains to be seen which players will stay put and who will move on in the coming months, but most positions in the team are going to need addressing.

Here, we have taken a look at eight Premier League players Reading should consider loaning in this summer...

Karl Hein made five Championship appearances on loan from Arsenal this season, and the 20-year-old could return next season to add competition for places with Luke Southwood.

Hein may have been the club's number one for the second half of the season if he did not pick up an injury that saw him return to North London.

Southwood should have the chance to establish himself in pre-season, but the Estonian could be an option to bring in for more senior experience.

Ciaran Clark could be the ideal loan signing for a relegation battle next season.

The Irishman has been largely out of favour this season for Newcastle United, but still has one more year on his deal on Tyneside.

The 32-year-old has 214 Premier League appearances to his name, but will likely fall out of the top-flight when his contract expires in the North East.

With an acceptance that the Magpies are not going to be able to recoup a fee for his services, Clark could be made available for loan this summer and he would bring vital experience to the Royals backline alongside Scott Dann and Tom McIntyre.

Abdul-Rahman Baba spent this season at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on loan from Chelsea.

The 27-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge and any first team involvement in that time seems unlikely.

Baba was not an outstanding performer for the Royals this term, but he was a valued member of the squad and could improve having settled down in new surroundings this season.

The Ghanaian started 29 Championship games and could improve on that number in the absence of the Africa Cup of Nations next term.

Tim Iroegbunam should be on a lot of second tier clubs' shortlists if made available for loan by Aston Villa this summer.

The 18-year-old has made three Premier League appearances this season and is ready to make a more regular step up to senior football.

With some more experienced players alongside him, Iroegbunam could thrive and he would go some way to replacing Tom Dele-Bashiru's position in the squad this term.

Some gambles may have to take place with constraints on recruitment this summer, bringing in Iroegbunam on a season-long loan would have a high ceiling.

Josh Onomah would be a very exciting signing on loan next season for Reading.

The 25-year-old has a year left on his contract at Fulham, with the club reserving an option to extend it, and he was sparingly used by Marco Silva in the second tier this season.

Therefore, promotion to the Premier League is unlikely to enhance his playing time, meaning there is a chance he is available for loan.

Central midfield is a real problem area heading into the summer and with Andy Rinomhota and Josh Laurent potentially departing, Onomah would be a coup to fill the void.

Another more high profile addition would be Bournemouth's Ben Pearson.

The tough tackling midfielder has not been a regular for the Cherries this term, and his deal runs until the summer of 2024 on the South Coast.

The 27-year-old would be well suited to the battle at Reading, and could bring the best out of some of the more up and coming talents in the squad.

Pearson would go some way to addressing the midfield deficiencies in preparation for a tough campaign.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi could add some X Factor in the final third for the Royals next season.

With Brandon Barker, Junior Hoilett and Tom Ince all potentially not returning, the Crystal Palace youngster would add an unknown quantity in the final third.

Yakou Meite's fitness is hard to rely on in wide areas and Rak-Sakyi could be made available to Championship clubs, if Patrick Vieira does not want to utilise him in the first team next season.

Liam Delap would be an exciting coup for the Royals to add competition for places with Lucas Joao.

With a pre-season behind him, Ince may look to implement a more attractive style of play next term, rather than focusing on organisation as much as he did towards the back end of this season.

The 19-year-old has four years left on his contract at Manchester City and will be physically ready for the step up to senior football next season.
