Barnsley have a lot of work to do as they prepare for life back in League One.

The 2021/22 campaign has been a really difficult one for the Tykes, who were in the Championship play-offs last term but lost manager Ismael Valerien and were never able to recover.

But the Oakwell outfit know what it takes to win promotion back to the second tier and will need to draw on that experience next term.

A rebuild is needed at the club and there isn't going to be a huge amount of money to spend, meaning that the loan market will be really important.

Barnsley have made the most of Premier League loanees in the past and bringing the right top flight players in this summer could be the difference between a successful 2022/23 campaign and a disappointing one.

With that in mind, we've highlighted eight Premier League players who Barnsley should consider loaning in this summer...

Sheyi Ojo struggled for consistency while on loan at Millwall in 2021/22 but the step down to League One level could help him thrive.

The 24-year-old certainly looks out of Liverpool's plans and they will likely be open to letting him leave on loan if a permanent move cannot be found.

Ojo is a pacey and direct forward so would provide the Tykes with some much-needed additional firepower ahead of their return to the third tier.

Manchester City 21-year-old Claudio Gomes has been a regular fixture while on loan at Barnsley this season and it would make sense to try and bring him back to the club for another season.

With loanees returning to parent clubs and players out of contract, central midfield is an area that could use bolstering, and the drop-down to League One level may allow Gomes to control games better.

His loan deal was cut short early after Barnsley's relegation was confirmed but he showed enough during his time at the Yorkshire club to suggest it could be good to re-sign him this summer.

With the likes of Domingos Quina and Amine Bassi returning to their parent clubs at the end of loan deals, the Tykes could do with adding some more creativity in midfield and Brighton's Taylor Richards looks an interesting option.

He struggled to make much of an impact in the Championship with Birmingham City last term – playing just 221 minutes of senior football after his move in January – but has thrived at League One level in the past – scoring 11 goals and providing five assists for Doncaster Rovers in 2020/21.

Barnsley would be able to offer him regular first team football and that may be enough to convince the Seagulls that sending him back to the third tier makes sense.

Despite links to Championship clubs in previous windows, Newcastle United Matty Longstaff is currently on loan at Mansfield Town in League Two and is absolutely thriving.

The 22-year-old joined on loan in January and has added six goals and two assists in 16 appearances since – helping the Stags reach the play-offs.

Barnsley have never really replaced Alex Mowatt and with Gomes' loan over and Romal Palmer set to depart, reinforcements are certainly needed so moving for Longstaff on loan looks a no-brainer.

The Tykes aren't exactly blessed with an embarrassment of riches at left-back – assuming Remy Vita returns to Bayern Munich – and Brighton teenager James Furlong should be someone they're looking at.

The 19-year-old has been a regular fixture in Premier League 2 this term, as his one goal and four assists illustrate, but regular senior football could be just what he needs to help his game develop.

Barnsley can offer him that and should be in contact with the South Coast club about a potential move.

As previously mentioned, strengthening in central midfield should be a priority for Barnsley ahead of their return to League One.

Aston Villa 18-year-old Tim Iroegbunam could be someone they look at to do just that, if they can convince the club to let him leave.

Iroegbunam made his debut earlier this month and Steven Gerrard has suggested he's "got all the attributes to be a top Premier League" but needs more confidence – something he could build at Oakwell.

Crystal Palace forward Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was named the Premier League club's U23s Player of the Season earlier this month after an eye-catching season that's seen him handed his debut by Patrick Vieira.

Given some of the other attacking players at Selhurst Park, the 19-year-old still finds himself down the pecking order and a loan to get some senior football would make sense.

Barnsley need to add more attacking firepower after seeing some of their most dangerous players from 2021/22 return to their parent clubs on loan and League One could be the right next step for Rak-Sakyi.

Barnsley need to add more goals to their side this summer and West Ham United's Sonny Perkins could be a smart addition to a striking unit made up of Cauley Woodrow and Carlton Morris.

What the 18-year-old lacks in first team experience, he can make up for with his hunger to impress and threat in front of goal.

Perkins scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for the U23s and four in five for the U18s on his way to The Dylan Tombides award this season.
