Nottingham Forest are a club with a fine history, most famously lifting back-to-back European cups in 1978/79 and 1979/80.

Since their relegation from the Premier League in May 1999, though, the club are yet to return to the English top-flight. A remarkable statistic given the size and the history of the club.

The Reds are looking good for a play-off spot in the Sky Bet Championship this season under Steve Cooper though, which could see that 23-year spell come to an end if things go their way.

The club have shown on their FA Cup run this campaign that their atmosphere is one of the best in the country, and a promotion to the top flight would allow them to once again compete against England's elite at the City Ground.

With that being said, despite not being in the top-flight, Forest have still had some pretty famous faces come through the door at the City Ground in recent years and it’s possible that you might have forgotten some of them

Here are eight players you probably forgot ever played for the Reds at some stage in their career.

The first player that you might have forgot is current Welsh international Aaron Ramsey, who currently plays for Rangers on loan from Juventus.

Ramsey joined Nottingham Forest on loan for just six weeks in the 2010/11 season, as part of a recovery from a leg break suffered playing for Arsenal against Stoke City.

Ramsey’s Forest debut came against Leicester City and he would go on to make just five appearances for the Reds during his time at the City Ground before returning to Arsenal at the beginning of January 2011.

Another player that you might have forgot played for Nottingham Forest is defender Clint Hill, who also made just five appearances for the Reds.

Hill was playing for Queens Park Rangers in 2011 when he suddenly joined the Reds on a 93-day emergency loan.

His debut came in September 2011 in a 1-0 win over Watford, but the defender would only go on to appear five times for the club.

He was eventually re-called from his emergency loan early due to injuries back at his parent club.

Another player who had a short loan spell at the turn of the 2010’s and that you might have forgotten played for Nottingham Forest is defender Danny Higginbotham.

Higginbotham joined the Reds on loan from Stoke City in the January transfer window in 2012, set to remain with Forest until the end of the season.

However, Higginbotham went on to make just six appearances for Forest before returning to Stoke that summer.

The now 43-year-old went on to have spells with Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, Chester and Altrincham post-Forest, before hanging up his boots in 2014.

Another former Manchester United player to make the list, along with Higginbotham, is Italian striker Federico Macheda.

Football fans will be familiar with Macheda for his wonder goal against Aston Villa on his Man Utd debut, but the now 30-year-old also had a spell at Nottingham Forest during his career.

Joining the Reds on loan from Cardiff City in 2016 on a short-term deal until the end of the season, Macheda went on to make a grand total of three appearances for the Reds.

Back to the defenders with this one and it's Matthew Upson that you might have forgotten played for Nottingham Forest this time.

The ex-Arsenal centre-half had a brief spell on loan at Nottingham Forest in 2000, making just one appearance during his time with the Reds.

Upson would go on to have a long career which included spells in the Premier League with Birmingham City, West Ham United and Stoke City, and also earned himself 21 England caps.

Having only made the one Forest appearance, you’d be forgiven for letting this one slip your mind.

Another ex-England international here and it’s John Terry that you might have forgotten had a spell with Nottingham Forest.

Terry’s loan spell came in 2000, just like Upson’s, but the former Chelsea and England captain would make six appearances during his time at the City Ground.

He returned to Chelsea after his loan spell and went on to captain the club to several honours, both European and domestic, whilst winning 78 caps for England and also captaining his country.

Most recently, Terry was assistant manager at Aston Villa.

Another man in single digits in terms of appearances for Nottingham Forest and that’s current Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford.

Bamford actually began his career with the Reds but only made two senior appearances for the club before joining Chelsea on a five-year deal in January 2012.

Although he never appeared for Chelsea in the league, he has gone on to have a good career in the top two divisions, and earned his first England cap in 2021 after a fine season in the Premier League with Leeds.

Last but by no means least, and making a decent chunk of appearances compared to some of the other players on this list, is legendary, former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright.

Wright had a loan spell at the City Ground in 1999, making 10 appearances for the Reds and scoring five goals. Fairly prolific even at age 36.

Post-Forest Wright went on to have spells with Celtic and Burnley before calling it a day on what was an excellent career.
