Currently battling away to try and avoid relegation to League One, Barnsley now have five matches left of this second-tier campaign.

The Tykes, who have seemingly picked up over the last couple of months or so, were close to cutting the gap from Reading to just two points over the weekend, however, Josh Laurent's 81st minute strike restored parity for the Royals.

Pola Asbaghi's side have picked up 12 points from their last eight league games, with the Barnsley boss knowing that this kind of form could give the Tykes a massive chance.

With lots of football still left to play, and memories of narrowly escaping the drop two seasons ago, Barnsley will be hoping to see a similar story played out this time around.

Whilst we wait to see what the rest of the campaign has in store for Poya Asbaghi's side, here, we take a look at eight players who you might have forgotten had ever played for Barnsley...

Jordan Smith featured just once for Barnsley, with the 27-year-old arriving at Oakwell on an emergency loan from Nottingham Forest during the Tykes' 2018/19 promotion-winning season.

The goalkeeper, who is still contracted by the Reds, kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley during that campaign.

Finding himself on the bench three times this season for the Tricky Trees, Smith has been unable to secure regular game time in the Championship over the last few seasons.

Simon Heslop featured just once for Barnsley, with the midfielder progressing through the ranks at Oakwell.

The 34-year-old came on as a 63rd minute substitute against West Brom near the concluding stages of the 2006/07 season, with the Tykes losing the game 7-0.

Heslop now plays for Scarborough Athletic, signing for the Northern Premier League Premier Division last summer.

Heslop's side are currently fourth in the seventh-tier of English football, 10 points from the top of the league.

Will Smith is another who has featured just once for the Tykes, with the 23-year-old playing just 11 minutes of an EFL Cup clash against Bradford City during the early stages of the 2018/19 campaign.

In December, Smith, and Romal Palmer, headed for a loan stint with Darlington in the National League North.

By the end of the campaign, Smith joined Harrogate Town on a permanent deal in search of a quicker route to regular first-team football.

Bartosz Bialkowski played twice for Barnsley, arriving at Oakwell in September 2009 on an emergency loan deal from Southampton, who was second choice with Saints at that point, with the club in League One.

The now-Millwall man played twice for the Tykes during the 2009/10 Championship campaign, featuring in victories over Ipswich Town and West Brom.

The experienced goalkeeper has gone one to emerge as an integral member of the Millwall squad, playing every minute of the club's second-tier campaign thus far.

Joe Wildsmith joins the list as another who joined the Tykes on an emergency loan deal, with the 26-year-old also featuring twice for the Yorkshire club.

Then 19, Wildsmith appeared in League One matches against Sheffield United and Bristol City during his short spell with Barnsley, conceding four goals in that time.

Now, the 26-year-old is playing in a deputy role to Bailey Peacock-Farrell at Sheffield Wednesday, with Wildsmith being confined to four appearances in the league.

Ryan Tunnicliffe played two games for Barnsley during the 2012/13 season, joining from Manchester United on a 28-day loan.

The United academy graduate featured in a 5-3 loss to Bristol City and a 3-2 loss against Bolton Wanderers, playing in a central midfield role and right-back position respectively.

Now, the 29-year-old is plying his trade in League One with Portsmouth, with the experienced midfielder proving to be a regular in the first-team set up when fit and available.

Callum Connolly arrived at Oakwell in March 2016, playing three times for the Tykes during the 15/16 League One campaign, with the Yorkshire outfit winning two of those matches.

Operating in both full back positions across those three games, Connolly was 18 years of age when he embarked on his temporary spell at Oakwell.

Now in the Championship with Blackpool, Connolly has 23 second-tier games to his name this season, operating in a variety of roles.

Joining during the second half of the 2015/16 League One campaign, Otis Khan played three league games for the Yorkshire outfit.

Khan saw just seven minutes of third-tier football with the Tykes during that campaign, being an unused substitute more often than not during that season.

Now at Leyton Orient, the 26-year-old has featured regularly since arriving at the club from Walsall in January.

The winger netted his first goal for the O's at the weekend in a 2-0 victory over his old club.
