Sheffield Wednesday, sadly, feel doomed in terms of turning their season around and staying in the Championship.

It’s been a tough season on the whole for Wednesday, with the odds stacked against them from the start following a points deduction.

Garry Monk and Tony Pulis have to take a share of the blame, though, failing to inspire a talented group of players to pull off something remarkable.

Darren Moore and his staff have done a reasonable job of steadying the ship and giving Wednesday hope. If it is to be League One they are planning for, fans can take some confidence in the latest decision Dejphon Chansiri has made.

However, whatever happens, it has to be a good summer in terms of recruitment.

With that in mind, we take a look at EIGHT players that Wednesday should seriously be considering recruiting for the new season…

Marriott’s loan spell at Hillsborough has been particularly underwhelming, with the striker failing to find his best form having arrived in South Yorkshire from Derby County.

However, what can be said is that Wednesday could do far worse than signing him up if they are relegated to League One.

Back in 2017/18, Marriott struck 27 goals for Peterborough in League One, which earned him a chance in the Championship.

He is, therefore, exactly the type of striker you want around as you look to fire your way back into the Championship.

Wednesday can do far worse than getting him back on board, no matter how disappointing the current campaign has been.

This could be a real bargain deal for Wednesday to look to do next season.

Football League World understand that Payne has a release clause in his contract at Swindon Town, where he can leave on a free if they are relegated from the third-tier.

They currently sit bottom of the pile in League One and that’s got the likes of Doncaster and Portsmouth taking an interest in him.

That duo expect to be challenging in League One next season at the very least, which is what you’d expect of Wednesday if they were relegated.

Surely they should be looking to pick up what would be one of the bargains of the summer for an attacker with nine goal involvements this season in a struggling side.

It’s going to be vitally important for Wednesday that they make better use of the loan market moving forwards as a club. It’s become a real necessity for all clubs in the EFL and even more so now.

McCalmont is a Leeds United player that’s thrived on loan with Oldham Athletic in the fourth-tier this season.

He’s rapidly approaching double figures in terms of goals from midfield and looks ready to now step up.

Maybe not at Leeds, but at least in terms of division, which brings relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday into the mix.

Hillsborough could be a great stage for McCalmont to elevate his game further.

The 24-year-old has been on loan with Doncaster Rovers this season in League One, scoring once and registering an impressive seven assists from the wing.

Moore, obviously, worked with Sims during his spell in charge of Donny and that could be a factor in the current Wednesday boss looking to lure Sims to Hillsborough for the coming season.

He clearly trusts what the winger can do in regard to his ability, which would be a boost for Wednesday heading back into the third-tier potentially.

This type of signing would be one that fans would, undoubtedly, be behind moving into the new season.

Jordan Rhodes looks like he might well be leaving Sheffield Wednesday and returning to Huddersfield Town, which in turn does put Frazier Campbell’s future into some doubt.

The 33-year-old has been good for Huddersfield this season in the Championship despite their general struggle, scoring seven goals and leading the line with real purpose.

For the sake of this article, combining Campbell with someone like Jack Marriott or Josh Windass, would give Wednesday a really good attack to fire them into 2021/22.

There’s a range of skills and experience there, which is only going to help in contributing to the good times again.

A cheap deal that might make sense to get done.

Boyle is reportedly someone that’s on the Wednesday radar this summer.

The Cheltenham Town defender has made 29 appearances this season in League Two, scoring six goals and even managing to notch a couple of assists.

In terms of Wednesday rebuilding next seasons, it’s going to be important that they do that from the back, with Moore’s focus on solidifying the defensive unit.

In Boyle, they would be getting their hands on someone that can do that and get even better given he’s only 25.

Money shouldn’t be much of an issue either, given this is Wednesday raiding the lower leagues for signings.

Again, signing Boyle is another deal that makes sense.

Lang was linked with both Birmingham City and Coventry City over the weekend, with the pair willing to take the forward into the Championship and offer him a route out of Wigan Athletic.

If you were of a Wednesday persuasion, you’d be looking to the club to get themselves involved in the race to sign the 22-year-old.

Lang would be another player that would be a signing fans could get behind after years of high-profile additions that haven’t made the grade.

He’s got potential to be good now and even better in the future, which is exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need.

Blackburn Rovers look like they will have a number of options on the books at left-back next season in the Championship, including Bell.

However, quite how high Bell is going to feature in the pecking order remains to be seen and, given he’s 26, he might be on the lookout for more regular game time.

The talented left-back would, undoubtedly, get that at Sheffield Wednesday as their squad evolves and looks for a significant improvement in 2021/22.

If there’s a deal there to be done, it would be great to see just what Bell could do if given the regular game time that Sheffield Wednesday could offer him.
