Rotherham United suffered another major blow to their survival hopes on Sunday with a potentially damaging 1-0 defeat at home to Birmingham City.

That result leaves the Millers still four points adrift of safety in the Championship, and although they still do have two more games in hand, time is running out for them to close that gap.

Rotherham need to make sure they keep battling which they will do and if they can get a couple more wins it might give them a chance of getting out of trouble.

Whatever league they happen to be playing in next term, the Millers will be needing to invest in the right sort of additions in the transfer market to keep the squad fresh and be ready for either another promotion battle or relegation fight. Paul Warne will therefore likely already be doing some planning towards the window.

With that in mind, we have taken a look at eight players who either are or should be on their radar this summer…

One player who could potentially be on Rotherham’s radar in the summer transfer window is midfielder Lewis Wing, who is set to face an uncertain future when he returns to the Riverside from his loan spell with the Millers.

Wing has made a positive impression for the Millers since he arrived at the New York Stadium in the winter window, and he has managed to provide two assists in his 15 Championship appearances. The 25-year-old is a player with more than enough ability to be performing as a key member of a side in either the Championship or League One.

Neil Warnock has already indicated that Wing will need to work hard in pre-season to impress him and manage to work his back into favour at the Riverside. If he is allowed to leave the club then the midfielder would be a good target for the Millers, but it might be dependent on them surviving.

One player that Rotherham have been linked with a potential move for in the summer is Boreham Wood forward Kabongo Tshimanga, with Football League World believing that the Millers are one of the clubs that have been keeping tabs on him.

The attacker has also reportedly been on the radar of the likes of Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle, with those clubs taking a close look over him as they prepare their potential transfer plans for next term. He has managed to fire in 15 goals in 34 league games for Boreham Wood this term.

The Millers might be able to offer him the prospect of Championship football if they survive, but even if they do go down they would be a very attractive proposition for a player who is currently playing at National League level.

A player who was reportedly interesting Rotherham in the January transfer window was Nnamdi Ofoborh, with the Millers having been linked with a potential loan move for him before he ended up moving to Wycombe Wanderers.

Ofoborh has signed a pre-contract agreement to leave his parent club Bournemouth for Rangers in the summer, and he will go up to Glasgow and try and make an impression for the Scottish champions. However, should he be made available for a loan move in his first season with the club then the Millers might well feel he could be a good player to bring in.

The 21-year-old has managed to make eight appearances for Wycombe in the Championship since he arrived on loan in January and he has delivered some promising displays. Rotherham might be a good potential destination for him next term if Rangers do deem he needs another loan move.

Another player that Rotherham could consider making a renewed attempt to sign in the summer is Stoke City defender Liam Lindsay. The Millers were linked with a potential move for him in the winter window before he joined Preston North End.

Lindsay is facing an uncertain future in the summer when he returns to Stoke, and the defender has been able to get some first-team football for Preston in the Championship in the second half of the campaign. The 25-year-old needs to find himself a settled home at the end of the campaign where he can continue to get more chances to impress.

If Rotherham do stay up in the Championship then Lindsay is a player that could be a good signing for them to make. However, it could depend on whether Preston are wanting to convert his loan move into a permanent deal.

Whatever league Rotherham happen to be playing in next season they could do a lot worse than considering making a move to sign Burnley midfielder Adam Phillips on loan for the campaign.

Phillips had enjoyed two excellent loan spells away from Turf Moor this term, the first of which came at Morecambe where he managed to register eight goals and six assists in his 25 appearances in League Two. After that, the 23-year-old moved to Accrington Stanley where has made 17 appearances in the third tier and managed to deliver some strong performances.

If Burnley are willing to allow him to leave the club on loan again next term, then Rotherham could be a very good destination for him. You could see Phillips being a very good player for them especially in League One were they to be playing at that level again next term.

This is a signing that would potentially be very difficult to make happen for the Millers this summer. However, if they were able to find the finances required to make it happen then a move for Accrington Stanley forward Dion Charles could be a wise one.

Charles has been enjoying an excellent campaign with Accrington in League One and he has managed to fire in 17 goals in his 37 appearances so far. That has seen him reportedly attract interest from Derby County as well as a number of other Championship clubs.

Were Rotherham to remain in the Championship then they could potentially be in a position to try and rival some of those clubs in the race for the forward. It is an unlikely addition but certainly, one to consider and one to maybe try and make happen if they survive.

Another potential player that Rotherham could consider making a move for in the summer is Swansea City full-back Kieron Freeman, who does look likely to be looking for a new club at the end of the campaign.

Freeman only arrived at Swansea in the winter window on a short-term deal until the end of the campaign, but he has not been able to force his way into the side on a regular basis. The 29-year-old though is someone with a lot of experience and proven quality in both the Championship and in League One.

The defender would therefore potentially be a wise signing for the Millers in the summer, although he has spent a lot of time at rivals Sheffield United which might be something that some supporters would not want to overlook. He was excellent in the 2016/17 season when the Blades got out of League One and he could do a similar sort of thing at the New York Stadium if they go down.

Ryan Giles could also be a target for Rotherham to look to bring back to the club in the summer when he returns to Wolves at the end of his loan spell with the club.

The defender has been able to deliver some strong performances for the Millers in the second half of the campaign and he has managed to also fire in two goals in his 17 appearances. The 21-year-old has shown he can be a very useful option going forwards in Warne’s system with wing-backs asked to provide the width going forwards.

You could see Wolves allowing him to leave the club for another loan move in the summer because he is unlikely to make it into their side next term. If that is to be the case then Rotherham should consider making another move to sign him whatever league they happen to be playing in.
