Millwall's fourth season in a row in the Championship will soon come to an end and the Lions have shown consistency after finishing in eighth spot in the 2019/20 campaign.

With not a lot of transfer funds to play with, Gary Rowett has kept Millwall in mid-table all season and they look set for a top half finish once again, seeing some big guns like Nottingham Forest and Derby County well below them.

Even though the season hasn't finished just yet, Rowett and his staff will surely have an eye towards next season already, with incomings and outgoings for the squad a big topic of discussion for the summer.

If Millwall want to make the top six in the Championship anytime soon, a little bit more investment into the players may be required and a few positions do need strengthening.

Let's look at eight players who should be on the Lions' list this summer as Rowett looks to get them in the Premier League for the first time ever.

With Rowett settling on a three centre-back formation this season, it looks like that's the way Millwall will be set up going forward, so they could do with some more bodies at the back.

George Evans came in in January as a player who can play in a back three but the Lions had a natural centre-back lined up in the form of Hibernian defender Porteous.

A seven-figure bid was knocked back for the 22-year-old, but he could be on the market this summer as Hibs chairman Ron Gordon recently confirmed that the club may have to sell one of their stars due to financial concerns.

It would now be no surprise to see Millwall back in for the youngster, who has played 30 times in the Scottish Premiership this season and would add some more physicality to the defence.

One of Millwall's first bits of business they should be doing this summer is to get Malone tied down to a permanent deal.

The 30-year-old arrived at the start of the season from Derby County on loan and was expected to battle with Murray Wallace for the left-wing-back position.

With Wallace spending time at both centre-back and on the sidelines though, it's given Malone the opportunity to nail down the role for himself, and he's missed just five Lions matches this season.

Following Malone's fourth goal of the season last month in the win over Preston North End, Rowett confirmed that talks had taken place between himself and Malone, whose Derby contract expires this summer, but official dealings will probably occur at the end of the season.

Ireland international Molumby enjoyed a productive campaign at The Den last season, playing 36 times in the Lions' midfield and they tried to bring him back to the club in January.

A club-record bid was lodged but turned down by the Seagulls, who instead loaned him out to Preston North End, where it hasn't quite gone to plan for the 21-year-old.

Molumby has started just seven times for PNE and a return to south London could reinvigorate the centre midfielder, and a partnership with Ryan Woods could potentially blossom.

With Brighton having a whole host of midfielders on their books, the club may be more receptive to another bid this summer for Molumby and the Lions should try their luck again.

If Molumby is a no-go, then Millwall could make an ambitious play for another central midfielder in the form of Ferguson of Aberdeen.

The 21-year-old is having a breakout scoring season in the Scottish Premiership, scoring eight times for the Dons 31 appearances.

Ex-Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes admitted back in December that the club will probably lose Ferguson eventually to another club, and he may be destined for one of Scotland's giants like Celtic or Rangers or perhaps a bigger Championship club, but Millwall could definitely try their luck if they're serious about cracking the play-offs.

He would add goals and energy to the midfield in an area where they need something going forward.

For a player who is 26 years old, Graham's 89 career appearances is minuscule and he would represent a real risk for a Championship club if one were to take a punt on him.

After seven scoreless appearances for Gillingham last season, the Kent club took a chance on Graham on a permanent deal, and he's repaid the faith by scoring 11 goals from the wing for Steve Evans' side.

Graham seems to have banished any fitness concerns having suffered a bad knee injury earlier in his career and with Millwall lacking a lot of creativity in wide areas, with just Jed Wallace really to rely on, Graham could be worth for the Lions or for another second tier outfit.

Lincoln did very well to get their hands on talented teen Rogers this season from Manchester City, and Michael Appleton's ability to nurture young talents has worked once again.

The 18-year-old has thrived in League One for the Imps, scoring six times from the left wing and notching a further three assists and he is destined to move up a level next season.

Rogers can also play in an attacking midfield role and his versatility could prove useful to Rowett if he decides to play with two wingers supporting a striker or just one 'number 10' behind two frontmen.

A Championship move is definitely the next step for Rogers and it could be with Millwall if they show interest.

Twine has been linked with a number of clubs in the past few weeks, with The Sun (4 April, page 61) saying that the likes of Barnsley, QPR and Burnley are all eyeing up the 21-year-old.

He's gained a reputation this season for scoring long-range screamers with both Newport in League Two and Swindon in the division above, and he could be set to bring his talents to the Championship next season.

Millwall could do with some more creativity through the middle of the park, and an unpredictable attacking midfielder like Twine - who has scored 11 goals this season between both clubs - could be what Millwall need to play alongside Jed Wallace.

Millwall's strikers have flattered to deceive this season, and the fact that the top scorer is midfielder Jed Wallace on eight goals says a lot.

Mason Bennett and Matt Smith have only notched five goals and that front-line could definitely do with some bolstering.

League One is definitely a good breeding ground for goalscorers and the likes of Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jerry Yates will be in demand this summer.

So will Accrington Stanley's Dion Charles, who's had a breakout season with the Lancashire club and at this moment in time has 17 goals in 36 League One outings.

Charles could represent a reasonable punt for the Lions and whilst he'd probably cost a seven-figure fee, it may just be a risk worth taking to try and freshen up a faltering strike-force.
