Cardiff City are a club who could be gearing up for a big summer in the transfer market.

The Bluebirds had been battling for promotion this season but look set to fall just short in the hunt for the play-off places with the club 11 points away from the top six with just four matches remaining.

After reaching the play-offs last season there's no doubt that fans will be disappointed at how this campaign panned out.

That means that efforts will be doubled next term.

Mick McCarthy will surely have an idea of what sort of player he wants to add to the squad this summer, but who are the contenders to move to South Wales?

Here are eight players that are on the club's transfer radar this summer.

The Accrington Stanley striker is certainly someone who is a target, according to reports from The Sun.

Charles has enjoyed an excellent season this term after scoring 18 goals already for the League One club, proving himself as one of the best attackers in the third tier.

With that in mind it's no surprise that he's attracting the interest of  Derby County, Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town.

Cardiff are looking for a proven goalscorer and it certainly seems that the 25-year-old could be an option given that he could be available for a relatively modest fee.

However with plenty of interest in his services it could be a tough deal to pull off.

The winger is bound to be a transfer target for Cardiff City this summer.

Wilson has spent the season on loan with the Bluebirds and enjoyed a decent campaign in which he has scored four goals and created 12 more for the Welsh side.

The 24-year-old is unlikely to have a future with Liverpool which means that they could be open to him moving on this summer.

Whether Cardiff could afford to sign him permanently is a huge question mark, but there's no doubt that after this season a move could be appealing - especially if the club are serious about kicking on and challenging for promotion.

The young striker is a player who could be hot property this summer.

Kayode is currently registered with Rotherham United but has spent the season on loan with Carlisle United where he has put in some promising performances to suggest that he's ready to play at a higher level.

According to Football Insider, the Bluebirds are part of list including Middlesbrough, Bournemouth and Brentford who could be in the hunt for the player this summer.

The 20-year-old is far from the finished article but if he was to move to Cardiff City he would be competing for a starting role in the side with the hope of kicking on and proving himself at Championship level.

Whether it's the sort of move that will be a priority remains to be seen, but there's no doubt that it could be one for the future.

Another current player who may well be a summer transfer target.

Ojo has spent the current season on loan in South Wales where he has scored five goals and created seven more in 40 appearances for the club.

The winger is registered with Liverpool where he's unlikely to have a long-term future which means that he could be allowed to move on this summer.

Given that Ojo has fallen out of the starting XI in recent times is perhaps an indication of where he ranks at the club at the moment, but there's nothing to say that a new deal won't be agreed if the terms are right.

It's certainly one to watch.

The striker looks set to be one of the hottest properties in the EFL this summer.

Clarke-Harris has enjoyed a wonderful season for Peterborough United this season after scoring 30 times for the Posh as they look to challenge for promotion.

Reports from Football League World have claimed that the Bluebirds are competing with Swansea City to sign the player.

There's no doubt that the 26-year-old is someone who could hit the ground running in South Wales but with Peterborough on track to secure automatic promotion it'll be interesting to see if they're willing to sell as they look to step up to Championship level.

If they do move for him he's likely to cost a substantial sum, so that's a consideration too.

The Sheffield Wednesday striker looks almost certain to move on.

Rhodes is out of contract this summer and given the Owls' struggle to avoid relegation it would be a huge surprise if he was to stick around in South Yorkshire.

Cardiff City have regularly been linked with a move for the experienced striker as they look to bolster their attacking line, but they must be careful.

While Rhodes has a proven pedigree at this level, it's been a while since he's enjoyed a full, consistent season and so any move represents something of a gamble.

That said, with no transfer fee to speak of there could be worse moves to do.

A player who has certainly been linked with Cardiff City in the past.

Lee Gregory looks set for an uncertain future after falling out of favour at Stoke City, leading him to join Derby County on loan for the second half of the season.

By all accounts the experienced striker has enjoyed his time with the Rams but he's a player who could be up for grabs this summer.

If Cardiff were looking for a player that can hit the ground running then Gregory is certainly it, and given that he's out of contract means that the player would be available for nothing.

Not a frontrunner but certainly one that could have legs.

A player who is almost certain to be on Cardiff City's radar.

Jerome was the subject of a January bid from the Bluebirds in the January transfer window, and while a move didn't come off, there's a good chance that they could go back in for him.

MK Dons, his current club, are set to be in League One again next term and so if the chance arose to move back to the Championship then there's a good chance that the experienced striker would jump at it.

This move would make sense for Cardiff given that he would likely be available for a minimal fee, but of course his age could be a deterrent.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens with Jerome and whether he could emerge as a genuine target this summer.
