Bristol City are set for another season in the Championship in 2021/22 after the club failed to make any progress once again.

The Robins have been stuck in the second tier since promotion in 2015, and despite investment in players and the infrastructure over the years, the club have never been able to crack the play-offs.

City showed promise two seasons ago by finishing eighth in the league but a run of poor results last season saw Lee Johnson lose his job after four years in charge, and Dean Holden couldn't manage to push for the top six either this season and was sacked in February.

Nigel Pearson came in to take over Holden's job but he hasn't had the big impact that fans desired, and it remains to be seen if he will be there beyond the end of the current campaign.

If he is though, he will need to be backed in the transfer market, so let's look at eight players who the Robins could be looking at bringing in through the arrival door at Ashton Gate this summer.

Bristol City's centre-back options going into next season somewhat flatter to deceive, with just Tomas Kalas, Taylor Moore and Zak Vyner contracted.

That isn't the greatest selection to choose from and major strengthening is needed, especially if Pearson or whoever the manager will be decides on a three centre-back system.

And if Mawson can prove his fitness he would be a good addition to the back-line, providing Fulham don't want him anymore.

Mawson played just 11 times for City this season due to injury - a campaign that was ended early due to a fresh knee injury - but he could be a target once again should he recover well.

Right-back is a position that could also do with some looking at for the Robins, with both Jack Hunt and short-term signing Danny Simpson out of contract at the end of the season.

Another player whose contract situation is up in the air is Ryan Nyambe of Blackburn Rovers, who has an optional extension that could be triggered at Ewood Park.

The fact it hasn't been done yet is worrying for Blackburn fans and LancsLive understand that Rovers would rather let him leave and have a compensation fee agreed by tribunal.

With City needing a new right-back for next season, Nyambe would be a perfect fit flying down the flank.

A different option to Nyambe but one that could also cover the midfield positions is O'Nien.

The versatile Sunderland player has spent the last six seasons in Leagues One and Two for the Black Cats and Wycombe, but he deserves a chance to show if he can do it in the second tier.

That could be with the Wearsiders next season but he's out of contract this summer and he could be running it down with the intention of exploring his options.

Not only could O'Nien be City's first-choice right-back for next season, but if injuries occur in the midfield then he could slot in there - and we all know how injury-prone Bristol City's squad has been this season.

It's not just the right side of the pitch where City have problems, but at left-back they've been struggling all season, with Jay Dasilva and Tommy Rowe both suffering long-term injuries.

A wildcard option for a signing this summer could come from the Scottish Premiership, and McMann.

The 24-year-old started his career at Hamilton Academical and that's where he remains, and he's assisted six goals for the Accies this season as they battle with relegation.

He could be worth a cheap punt for City as Harry Pickering from Crewe would've probably been an ideal signing, however he was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers in January.

There is another left-sided player that will be available this summer and whilst he's not a left-back, if a wing-back system is adopted he can play there and also all across the front line.

Reach has proven to be one of the most versatile players in the Championship in the last few years, but he's clearly most effective as a winger and that's another area City could do with a bit of beefing up in.

The 27-year-old has scored five times for the Owls this season in a campaign that may very well end up in relegation to League One, but there's no doubts that he will get another Championship contract upon the expiry of his current deal this summer - and for a team like Bristol City he would probably slot in just fine.

A striker or two will definitely be on the City agenda this season due to Famara Diedhiou's contract situation, and one that has been linked multiple times over the last few weeks is Jerry Yates.

The Blackpool frontman has been prolific for the Seasiders this season, netting 18 goals in 39 outings as he looks to pretty-much single-handedly propel them into the Championship.

That record has seen him linked to many clubs, and BristolLive believe that Yates is a player that City's staff are 'aware of', and it remains to be seen whether or not that translates to a bid being made.

He wouldn't be the worst pick-up though and considering Ivan Toney made the jump up a level this season with ease, Yates could do the same.

Another striker who has been linked to Ashton Gate plenty of times in the last few months is Assombalonga, who will be departing Middlesbrough this summer, four years after making the move to the Riverside for a reported £15 million.

Assombalonga guaranteed goals for the first few years at Boro, hitting double figures in the last three seasons however the 2020/21 campaign has been a different story.

The 28-year-old has scored just five times and it's already been confirmed that his contract won't be renewed.

BristolLive played down City's links to Assombalonga, but if Nigel Pearson can revitalise him and the wages are within reason, he wouldn't be the worst addition.

Bristol Rovers fans would absolutely hate to see Clarke-Harris turn out in the red colours of their rivals, but if City want a goalscorer then there's probably no better one this season than the 26-year-old.

Strikers seem to profit in Peterborough's attacking system, and because Ivan Toney has gone from strength-to-strength after leaving Posh for Brentford, many think Clarke-Harris can do the same.

He's scored 28 goals in League One this season and Posh will be braced for bids this summer, even if they do get promoted to the Championship.

The Robins would be silly not to put their own offer in for the prolific striker even if they get outbid by others.
