Lee Bowyer's fantastic start to life as Birmingham City boss continued yesterday as his side beat Rotherham United.

Whilst another result may be required before the end of the season to confirm safety, the reality is that Blues have taken a major step towards ensuring they don't go down.

With four wins and a draw from his first six games, Bowyer has made an instant impact at St. Andrew's, with all the team pulling together.

Therefore, fans will be excited to see what the future holds under the former player, with an interesting summer ahead.

Blues are unlikely to be big spenders due to their well-documented financial issues, but Bowyer will hope to be able to do business to make his own mark on the squad.

And, here we look at EIGHT players the club should consider signing...

Central defence is by no means a pressing issue for Bowyer because the team have defended superbly since he took over, with Harlee Dean and Marc Roberts shining.

However, the lack of options behind them is a worry, particularly with Jake Clarke-Salter only on loan. So, a young option with the potential to improve should be on Blues' radar, and Hibs centre-back Porteous fits the bill.

He is aggressive in the way he defends and capable on the ball, and at 22-years-old this could be a smart long-term addition for Blues and the Scottish side may not be in a position to resist a decent offer.

This would be a tough one to conclude as it things could be complicated if West Brom go down, which looks likely. Additionally, Field is on loan at QPR, so they may lead the race to bring the midfielder in permanently.

But, in terms of his profile, Field fits the bill for what Blues need. He would bring a bite and physicality to the midfield and he is also assured on the ball.

A new defensive midfielder has to be on the radar and the chance to become a key player at St. Andrew's may appeal to the Albion man.

It seems inevitable that Blues will be linked with Charlton players given Bowyer was in charge at The Valley and Forster-Caskey is someone who would improve the squad.

The 26-year-old is bright and progressive in the way he plays, and those are qualities that Blues need, because despite their excellent start, they are still struggling to create chances and score goals from open play.

So, with midfield surely a priority, Bowyer could turn to who he knows and prising Forster-Caskey from Charlton would be easy enough as his contract expires in the summer, so if the Addicks don't go up, it's hard to imagine he will stay.

This would be a slightly ambitious move, as some top Championship clubs have been linked with the Swindon man, but Blues could give Twine a platform to play regularly and show his ability in the second tier.

An attack-minded midfielder, Twine has qualities that Blues are desperately lacking, including a goal threat from midfield. Again, he is another that should fit the profile for what Bowyer wants moving forward; a young, hungry player with a point to prove.

Agreeing a deal for the midfielder shouldn't be an issue given Swindon's position, with a summer move feeling inevitable. But, it could be difficult to win the race for Twine, but Birmingham should still do all they can as this would be a coup.

The Sheffield Wednesday winger is out of contract in the summer and he's not going to stay at Hillsborough if the club are relegated to League One, which is going to happen.

So, on a free transfer he is going to be an attractive option, although it would be a difficult race for Blues to win considering the other clubs who will be in for Harris.

Nevertheless, he could become a key player at St. Andrew's, with his direct style, versatility and pace making him a good performer at this level.

Blues could look to take advantage of Sheffield Wednesday's likely relegation by also making a move for Windass.

Again, scoring goals and creating chances is the major problem facing Bowyer, and Windass would help on that front. He has the ability to play across the forward line, boasting pace and an eye for a goal.

He has struggled for consistency in his career, but it's clear that Windass has quality and Bowyer would back himself to be the man to really get the attacker firing on a regular basis. Should Wednesday go down, he wouldn't command a huge fee either.

Blues have been linked with a move for the Wigan attacker and he would appear to be an ideal signing.

With his contract about to enter its final year, and with the Latics potentially heading into League Two, agreeing a deal shouldn't be too much of an issue.

More importantly, Bowyer would be getting a player who can score goals, is clever with his link up play and movement, whilst at 22, has his best years in front of him. This really could be a bargain signing that pays off spectacularly if the transfer does happen.

The Scottish forward is someone that has been on Blues' radar previously, as they came close to signing Nisbet from Hibs in January, but a deal just couldn't be finalised before the deadline.

Whilst the change in manager may impact things at St. Andrew's, you can't imagine that Bowyer would be against bringing in the striker.

With target men Lukas Jutkiewicz and Sam Cosgrove at the club, it's clear Birmingham need a poacher, and Nisbet has those qualities. The board were ready to spend a fairly decent sum on him in the winter window, and he may be available for less in the summer.
