Barnsley have enjoyed an exceptional campaign in the Championship this season and the Tykes have managed to put themselves in with a real chance of securing a top-six finish.

Valerien Ismael’s side will be hoping they can go on to secure their play-off place and then successfully earn promotion to the Premier League. That would be a remarkable achievement for the club and be reward for the way they have been operating.

Whatever division the Tykes are playing in next season, they will be needing to build on their momentum by bringing in the right sort of signings to keep them progressing in the right direction. While they will of course be needing to secure the long-term futures of a number of key players.

With the summer window in mind, we look at eight players who already are, or who maybe should be on their transfer radar this summer…

One main priority for Barnsley in the summer should be trying to potentially make a permanent move for the in-demand Daryl Dike.

Barnsley’s chief executive Dane Murphy has provided a major potential boost for the Tykes in their hopes of landing Dike, with him suggesting the forward’s release clause is achievable for the club and is less than reports have indicated.

The Tykes though are still going to face a lot of competition from Premier League clubs for his signature. It could therefore be a transfer that is very difficult for the Tykes to get over the line. Although the forward has reportedly indicated he would be willing to sit down with Barnsley to discuss his future if they earn promotion.

Another player that Barnsley are being strongly linked with a potential interest in ahead of the summer transfer window is Swindon Town playmaker Jack Payne.

The future of Mowatt is still up in the air at the moment, so Payne is the sort of player that could be an option to replace him in their side were he not to sign a new deal at Oakwell. The 26-year-old has been an impressive performer for Swindon in League One this term, and he has chipped in with four goals and five assists.

It is being reported by The Sun on Sunday (11/04, page 61), that Barnsley are weighing up a six-figure offer for the attacking midfielder as they eye a potential bargain move. This might not be the most exciting-looking addition but it could turn out to be a decent signing.

Another Swindon Town player who has emerged as a potential target for Barnsley ahead of the summer transfer window is promising midfielder Scott Twine.

Twine has been enjoying an impressive campaign with Swindon in League One this term, with the 21-year-old managing to register five goals and three assists since his return from a loan spell with Newport County. That has seen him attract the attentions of Barnsley and also Queens Park Rangers, according to The Sun.

The midfielder certainly fits Barnsley’s model of bringing in bright young prospects and you could see them getting the best out of him were he to arrive at Oakwell. If the Tykes do earn promotion, they would surely hold a real advantage in getting this one over the line.

One player who Barnsley have previously been credited with an interest in that could potentially emerge back on their radar in the summer is Wigan Athletic’s in-demand forward Kyle Joseph.

Barnsley were linked with a potential move for Joseph back in the January transfer window. Reports emerged that the Tykes had lodged offers for the 19-year-old as they aimed to fend off competition form both Celtic and Rangers. However, in the end, no move materialised for him.

Joseph is sure to once again attract interest from a number of clubs this summer, and Newcastle United have become the latest side to be linked with a possible swoop for him. Therefore, Barnsley will not find it easy to get this deal done.

One position that Barnsley might want to look at strengthening in the summer transfer window is in the goalkeeping department.

The Tykes have not had a settled number one throughout the campaign with Brad Collins featuring 17 times and Jack Walton playing 24 games.

Were they to be in the market for a new keeper, then Oxford United’s Jack Stevens would be a good option for them. The 23-year-old is already attracting the attentions of Middlesbrough thanks to his impressive performances this term. He has saved two penalties and also kept 12 clean sheets so far this term.

The keeper fits with Barnsley’s model of bringing in younger players with potential and he could mature into a quality goalkeeper capable of performing well in the Championship and Premier League. It is certainly one they should be considering.

This would be a very ambitious transfer to try and pursue in the summer, but with Mowatt’s future up in the air one player who they should look at is Stoke City’s Nick Powell.

Powell sees his current deal with the Potters expire in the summer and Michael O’Neill has already indicated that Stoke could be finding it difficult to be able to afford to offer him a new deal. Were Barnsley to be promoted to the Premier League then they would be able to afford his wages and it could be a very good signing for them.

The attacking midfielder has managed to register 12 goals and provide three assists so far this term for Stoke, and there was interest from Newcastle United in him in the January window. Whilst it might be difficult for Barnsley to bring in Powell, it is certainly a signing that would fit the bill if Mowatt leaves.

Another player that Barnsley could potentially look to target in the summer transfer window is Plymouth Argyle’s in-demand forward Luke Jephcott.

Jephcott has enjoyed an excellent campaign with Plymouth in League One and he has managed to fire in 16 goals in his 37 league appearances. That has seen the 21-year-old be linked with moves to the likes of Nottingham Forest and Derby County. Some reports have suggested he could be valued at around £5 million.

He would fit the model of Barnsley’s recruitment of young and talented players and he could potentially be well suited to their style of play. If they are promoted it could hand them the chance to take him ahead of clubs like Nottingham Forest and Derby.

Another potential player that Barnsley could target in the forward department is Luton Town’s James Collins, who has been reportedly on the radar of Derby County.

Collins is set to be out of contract with Luton in the summer, and he has managed to prove he can perform in the Championship with him registering nine goals in 36 appearances this term. The 30-year-old also chipped in with 14 goals in the league last season as well.

This might be more of a signing to consider if Barnsley are still in the Championship next term. On a free he would be a low-risk addition and could do a job for them upfront.
