It looks set to be a nervy, and indeed eventful, end to the season for Rotherham United.

With the Millers locked in a relegation battle at the bottom of the Championship table, and a number of games in hand following postponements earlier in the campaign, there is certainly going to plenty to think about for those at the New York Stadium.

One such issue will be the plans they have to make for the summer transfer window, which will no doubt be influenced by just what division the club are in next season.

That could of course have an impact on both incomings and outgoings at Rotherham before the start of the 2021/22 campaign, and manager Paul Warne has already admitted that the club find themselves in a difficult situation with regards to several members of their squad, despite opening talks over their futures.

But just who are the players who could be set to leave Rotherham come the end of the season?

Here, in order to get an idea of that, we've taken a look at eight players who the Millers could be forced to sell or release from The New York Stadium this summer.

We start this list with one of those players who it is understood Warne was referring to in those aforementioned comments, in the shape of Matt Olosunde.

The right back is one of several members of the Millers squad who is out of contract at The New York Stadium at the end of the campaign, and having produced some impressive performances since Rotherham's return to the Championship, it would be no huge surprise if the American was to attract interest come the summer transfer window.

That could put Rotherham in a difficult position if they are unable to avoid relegation and another club comes in with a better offer for the 23-year-old, which may force them to concede defeat in their attempts to get Olosunde to sign a new deal, which could put his release on the cards.

Another one of those it has been suggested Rotherham are working over a new contract for, without any certainty of success, is Michael Smith.

At the time of writing, Smith is Rotherham's top scorer this season with nine league goals in 35 Championship appearances, and there is at least one more year remaining on the striker's current contract at The New York Stadium.

That does at least mean they could receive a fee for the 29-year-old this summer, but given that could be their last chance to do that before he can leave on a free at the end of next season, you wonder whether the Millers could be tempted to cut their losses on Smith, should the right offer come in.

One player who already looks bound for the exit door at Rotherham come the end of this season, is striker Kyle Vassell.

Having fallen down the pecking order at Rotherham this season, failing to score in 12 Championship appearances since the start of the campaign, Vassell was loaned out to League One side Fleetwood Town during the January transfer window, and has so far made 20 appearances for the Cod Army, scoring on three occasions.

Considering the fact that they were willing to loan him out at the turn of the year, and with his contract expiring at the end of this season, it would feel like something of a surprise if Vassell does not find himself as a free agent this summer.

Having joined the club as a free agent last November, following his release from Lincoln City at the end of last season, you get the feeling Vickers might be looking for another club this summer.

The 25-year-old only signed a contract with the Millers until the end of the current campaign, and given he has yet to make a single appearance for the club, it does appear that he hasn't really had the opportunity to impress enough to earn a new deal, which may not bode well for his prospects of doing so that.

The risk with that that Rotherham may be wary of however, is that with Jamal Blackman only on loan from Chelsea, Vickers' potential departure would leave them without a recognised back-up for Viktor Johansson.

Another player who Rotherham are seemingly facing a challenge to retain the services of come the summer, is Clark Robertson.

Just like his previous campaign with the Millers, this has been a frustrating one for the full-back, who has struggled for game time due to injury, although the club do still appear to be keen to keep him if they can, having reportedly opened talks over a new deal.

However, Robertson's fitness issues may be something of a concern for the club, meaning they may not want to take a chance on agreeing too costly a deal here, something which may leave the Millers with a big decision to make on the 27-year-old's future.

One other player whose future at Rotherham is apparently up in the air as the Millers look to secure a new deal for him, is Matt Crooks.

The midfielder has enjoyed an impressive campaign in the second-tier for Rotherham this season, scoring six goals and three assists in 34 league games to date, earning him the Championship's player of the month back in January.

Those performances mean Crooks is another who could attract attention given his seemingly uncertain future at The New York Stadium, and as he enters the final year of his contract, Rotherham may find themselves tempted to sell should a decent enough offer come in, in order to receive a fee for him while they still can.

One player who seemingly finds himself in a similar position to the aforementioned Vassell with regards to his position in the Rotherham United pecking order, is Billy Jones.

Having made just five league appearances during the first half of the campaign, the defender is another who was loaned out to League One during the January transfer window, as he re-joined former club Crewe Alexandra.

Given the fact that at 34-years-old, Jones is approaching the latter stages of his playing career, and with his contract at the New York Stadium set to expire this summer, the right-back is another who could find himself looking for a new permanent club come the end of this season.

Having joined Rotherham from Shamrock Rovers in his native Ireland back in the summer of 2019, things haven't worked out in the way Clarke would have hoped during his time with the Millers so far.

The defender has so far struggled to establish himself at The New York Stadium, and has so far been handed a rather underwhelming five league starts in what is now almost five seasons with the club.

As a result, with his contract at Rotherham set to enter its final 12 months this summer, you do feel as though the Irishman may be another who the Millers may be tempted to try and move on at the end of this season, to try and bring in some potentially helpful funds in the current climate.
