Portsmouth have somewhat transitioned since long-serving manager Kenny Jackett departed last month, being replaced by Danny Cowley in the hot-seat at Fratton Park.

The ex-Lincoln and Huddersfield boss came in to turn the faltering results around and made a fantastic start, winning four on the bounce to solidify their spot in the League One play-off places.

However that run came to a crashing halt at the weekend as the in-form Burton Albion visited the south coast, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side crushed Cowley's winning start with a 2-1 victory for the Brewers.

A goalless draw away at Crewe Alexandera, which saw star striker John Marquis miss from the penalty spot, was even more frustrating and it now leaves Pompey in sixth spot, with Oxford United and Charlton Athletic lurking up on them.

Portsmouth's squad is obviously in limbo right now not knowing which league they will be in next season, but let's look at eight players who may end up departing Pompey this summer.

Daniels was a Jackett signing in January, having spent the first half of the season at league rivals Shrewsbury.

It was a big drop down from Daniels' last taste of regular football - he made 21 appearances in the Premier League for Bournemouth in the 2018/19 season but with his advancing years, the left-back had to drop down the leagues in search of game-time.

The 34-year-old has started just one of the six games that Cowley has been in charge in, coming off the bench in three others but it does look like Lee Brown is his first choice in that position.

Will Daniels settle for being a back-up at this stage in his career? Or will he even get offered a new deal at the end of the season? Time will tell, but he still has a wand of a left foot and he deserves to be playing football in his final years.

Hiwula arrived at Fratton Park in October as striking competition to John Marquis and Ellis Harrison, but he's barely been given a chance whatsoever.

The 26-year-old has sat on the bench more often than not and has made just eight League One appearances this season, finally getting his first start in Cowley's first game against Ipswich.

Disaster struck though as Hiwula suffered an ankle injury that has ruled him out for the rest of this season, meaning he will be unable to impress the new manager enough to perhaps earn a contract extension.

You'd imagine that he will depart on a free at the end of the campaign, although there's a chance he could remain in pre-season to prove himself when fit.

Nicolaisen linked up with Pompey at the start of the season on a loan deal from Danish side Midtjylland, but has he done enough to earn a permanent move?

The Dane really hasn't had a run of consistent games to prove himself. There was a stint in February where he was in the team over Jack Whatmough, but he was soon back on the bench after he'd started five games in a row.

Danny Cowley hasn't started Nicolaisen yet and that may be a sign that he's not in his plans for next season, so it looks like a return to Denmark is on the cards for the 23-year-old.

A boyhood Pompey fan, Whatmough has been at the club since the age of 13 after leaving Southampton's academy and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old back in 2013.

His career has been hampered by knee injuries, but he's put that behind him this season and has played 32 games at the heart of Pompey's defence.

Like many in the squad though, his contract comes to an end this summer and Whatmough stated back in November that talks hadn't begun on a new one at that moment.

Things may have changed since then, but you've got to imagine that the club will be offering Whatmough fresh terms - if they don't he will no doubt have interest from other suitors in League One and perhaps the division above.

Williams is in a similar situation to Whatmough where his deal is expiring at the end of the current campaign, but he's made enough appearances this season to the point where you think a new deal will be on the table.

The Australian has played 35 times for Pompey in League One, scoring four times and assisting a further six goals and he's proven to be very versatile, playing all across the forward line and attacking midfield role this season.

The club may feel they can upgrade on Williams though, which may be a possibility - the player though has said he would prefer to stay at Fratton Park but the decision may not be in his hands.

It's probably a surprise that Downing hasn't left Fratton Park yet, and he probably already would have done if it wasn't for an injury he picked up in January.

The centre-back joined in the summer of 2019 from Blackburn but after making six appearances at the start of last season, he remained rooted to the bench for the rest of the campaign, falling out of favour with Kenny Jackett.

The same fate occurred this season as Downing was restricted to cup appearances - he hasn't made a single league appearance and sides in League One and Two were interested in signing him a few months ago, but a hamstring injury put a stop to his exit.

With a year left on his deal, Downing may end up being paid off by Pompey to leave and seek a new challenge.

Currently on loan at Northampton Town, Morris is out of contract at Fratton Park this season and will probably depart when it expires.

Morris hasn't had the most comfortable time at Pompey, having missed the whole of last season with an injury, and when he finally got fit and had a run of starts at the beginning of the current campaign, he was quickly dropped by Kenny Jackett.

The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to the Cobblers and he may have played his last game for Pompey - they have better options in the middle of the park and it doesn't seem feasible to offer him a new deal.

If Curtis can grab a few more goals between now and the end of the season, then he will have hit double figures in League One for three years straight - mainly playing as a winger.

That's a good record for someone who was a punt from the League of Ireland in 2018, and since his move to Fratton Park he's been capped six times by the Irish national team, which shows the level he's playing at.

This season, the 25-year-old has netted seven times and added five assists to his tally, and if Pompey don't get promoted they must seriously be worried about a Championship team coming in for Curtis and turning his head.
