Middlesbrough are gearing up for another incredibly busy summer.

Recent years have seen the Teessiders face huge turnover in their playing squad as the club's hierarchy look to transform their fortunes on the pitch and cut the hefty wage bill in the process.

The end of this season looks like it won't be any different.

Neil Warnock has had nearly 12 months to cast his eye over the playing squad and will certainly be making some changes this summer.

Some players are out of contract while others may be seen as contenders to be sold on in order to boost the club's coffers as they look to strengthen.

But who are the players that could move on? Let's take a look.

The striker is certainly the highest profile player who faces an uncertain future at the Riverside Stadium.

Assombalonga joined the club in 2017 for a club-record fee of £15million and has been the club's main goalscoring outlet during his time at the club.

15 goals in his first season was followed by 16 in his second, before a disappointing season for the club as a whole where Assombalonga got just 11.

This term has been a bit of a disaster for the 28-year-old who has just five goals to his name in a season where he has fallen out of favour and been stripped of his captaincy.

It seems increasingly likely that the player will move on this summer, particularly given that he's the club's highest-paid player by some distance.

Another player who would be a notable departure if he was to move on.

Fletcher also joined the club in the summer of 2017 after joining from West Ham United for a fee of £6.5million.

Unfortunately the striker just hasn't been able to live up to that transfer fee during his four years at the Riverside Stadium.

A tally of 13 goals last term was the 25-year-old's best season for the club by some distance but unfortunately injury stopped him from playing a central role this term.

It remains to be seen whether he'll stick around but with interest building from elsewhere he seems like another player who could move on.

The winger moved to the Riverside Stadium after the club were relegated in the summer of 2017.

Johnson reportedly joined for a fee of £2.5million and while there's questions over whether he's justified that fee, there's no doubt that he's become a valuable squad option.

The 30-year-old has become something of a utility player after playing on the left wing, the right wing and even left-back making him a valuable player for Neil Warnock's side.

Johnson penned a one-year extension last season and has made 37 appearances for Middlesbrough so far this term.

A player who isn't thought to be a high-earner, there's every chance that the Teessiders will agree terms with the player over a new contract extension.

A player who arrived at the club during the January transfer window with a big point to prove.

Mendez-Laing had been without a club after being sacked by Cardiff City last autumn, meaning that he had some real work to do in order to find his match sharpness.

A player who Neil Warnock knows well, the winger has made nine appearances for the club so far, scoring one goal and creating another.

With the 72-year-old in charge next season it'll be interesting to see if he offers an extension to the player who arrived on a short-term deal earlier this year.

Given that Warnock was the man to give him a career lifeline, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him commit his future to the Teessiders.

The goalkeeper is another player who penned a short-term deal with the club after arriving in January.

Archer has real pedigree at Championship level having previously played for Millwall and so there's no doubt that he has something to offer at this level.

But despite his time at the club the 28-year-old has played just once for the Teessiders, the FA Cup clash with Brentford in January.

While it remains to be seen what the future will hold for the player, it'd be a bit of a surprise to see him extend his stay given the lack of match action that he's had under Neil Warnock.

However if the right terms could be agreed then an extension is possible.

Moving onto those who could be sold, the midfielder is arguably at the top of the list.

Despite being a first team regular in recent seasons, Wing has certainly fallen out of favour since Neil Warnock took charge of the club almost 12 months ago.

The central midfielder started just three Championship games in the first half of the season before being sent out on loan to Rotherham United where he has done particularly well.

Wing will return to the club this summer but there are doubts over whether he'll realistically be given a chance under Warnock.

That could pave the way for him to be sold on and for Middlesbrough to use any funds towards potential new arrivals.

The wing-back is another who has fallen out of favour under Neil Warnock.

Coulson has started just five games in all competitions for Middlesbrough so far this season, and even went two months without featuring for the first team with no injury reported.

The issue for Coulson is about fitting into Warnock's system.

Marc Bola is preferred at left-back, while he clearly prefers the likes of Yannick Bolasie or Neeskens Kebano on the left wing, meaning that the 22-year-old falls somewhere in between.

This means that he could be dispensable and a player seen as a financial asset in a time of limited funds.

The goalkeeper is a player who could be a contender to move on.

Stojanovic joined the club in January 2020 and made eight appearances in the second half of the 2019-20 season.

Coming into this campaign it was hoped that he'd go on to become a key player, but the arrival of Marcus Bettinelli indicated that he perhaps wasn't rated by Neil Warnock.

The Austrian goalkeeper made one EFL Cup appearance for the club this season before being allowed to join FC St Pauli on loan during the January transfer window.

Fans would like to see the 27-year-old given a chance at the Riverside Stadium, but based on this season it seems that he may be deemed surplus to requirements.
