This summer is an opportunity for somewhat of a reset at Watford.

A disastrous 2021/22 campaign in the Premier League once again revealed some major flaws in the setup at Vicarage Road and the club are looking to correct them this summer.

The hiring of Rob Edwards certainly represents a change in approach from the Hornets, but only time will tell whether or not he is afforded the time to build something in WD18.

With that being said, a key part of Watford's success under Edwards next campaign will be getting their recruitment right this summer.

With the likes of Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr expected to leave, and Cucho Hernandez and Josh King having already left, the attacking third of the pitch is looking a particular priority for those in charge of recruitment at the club.

There is always the possibility for recruitment to go wrong, though, as Watford have found out on plenty of occasions.

With that in mind, here on FLW, we've put together a list of eight of the most underwhelming Watford signings from recent times.

One of the most underwhelming and recent signings that did not work out for Watford was last summer when they brought Fenerbahce midfielder Ozan Tufan to the club on loan.

Dubbed the 'Turkish Paul Pogba' by some, the 27-year-old failed to live up to the hype.

There was hope that Tufan could add some creativity to a midfield that was lacking it for large parts last season, but in the end, he made a total of only nine appearances for the club.

His time in Hertfordshire was cut short when Watford terminated his loan deal at the beginning of February.

Currently, the Turkish international is reportedly set to sign for Championship side Hull City, so we may see him back at Vicarage Road sooner rather than later.

Danny Rose was another player that arrived at Vicarage Road and underwhelmed massively.

When he turned up at pre-season fans knew it would take time for the former England international to get up to full fitness, but despite months passing, Rose still appeared way off the pace.

In the end, the 31-year-old made just eight Premier League appearances for the club before being ostracized from the first team squad.

Reportedly contracted to the club until 2023, it will certainly be interesting to see what the club do with regards to Rose this summer.

The last time the Hornets were relegated to the Championship they signed veteran striker Glenn Murray and he turned out to be an underwhelming addition, too.

Murray made just six appearances for the club after his arrival, with the now 38-year-old firmly out of favour of former Hornets boss Vladimir Ivic.

In the end, Murray departed the club during the January transfer window having not featured for the Hornets since October.

These days the former Brighton and Bournemouth forward has hung up his boots, but found time for a short stint with Nottingham Forest before doing so following his Watford exit.

This one may come as a surprise to outsiders given how well he has done since moving on, but Craig Dawson was another hugely underwhelming signing for Watford in recent times.

Signed in the summer of 2018 at a time when fans were crying out for some central defensive additions, Dawson look poor during his time at Vicarage Road.

Indeed, many were relieved to see him move on for a fee following the Hornets relegation to the Championship, but in fairness to the centre-half, he has gone on to be excellent at West Ham.

Still at the London Stadium, the 32-year-old made 48 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers in 2021/22.

Spanish defender Marc Navarro has to go down as another underwhelming signing that Watford have made in recent years.

Joining the club from Espanyol in 2018 during his stay with the Hornets, Navarro appeared just 13 times.

When he did appear, he looked out of his depth and perhaps this is why the player is not currently with a club.

The 26-year-old is not so bad that club's wont touch him, but the fact he is struggling to find a new team reflects just how poor his Watford spell was.

It will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old finds a new team to sign for this summer.

Jerome Sinclair is another transfer that the Hornets will surely regret making over the past few seasons.

Signed when his deal with Liverpool expired, the compensation Watford were required to pay for the Englishman ended up being in the region of £4 million.

That turned out to be £4 million down the drain, with Sinclair failing to live up to his potential at the club, appearing just 14 times for Watford across his five years at the club.

That period included spells on loan in League One, the Eredivise, and Bulgaria, before his Watford contract finally expired last summer.

At present, Sinclair is currently without a club.

Dimitri Foulquier is yet another shocker of a transfer Watford have made during recent times.

The defender was underwhelming because the Hornets barely got to see him in a yellow shirt.

He joined the club in 2017, but did not make his debut until the 2019/20 season, appearing five times and looking completely out of his depth.

The defender has gone on to do just fine since leaving the club, though.

He re-joined Granada in early 2020 where he helped the club qualify for the Europa League.

The right-back has since gone on to sign for Valencia, where he featured 36 times in 2021/22.

Last but not least, the final underwhelming signing on this list is Belgian forward Obbi Oulare.

Oulare joined the Hornets the summer that they were promoted to the Premier League in 2015, and for a hefty fee, too.

As per reports, the forward set them back a reported fee of £6 million.

That outlay and the awarding of a five year contract at Vicarage Road was never rewarded by the player, who, in fairness, was never given the opportunity to show fans what he could do.

Perhaps there was a reason for that, though.

In the end, the 6ft5 Belgian made just three first team appearances for Watford, before moving on on several loan spells in the seasons following that campaign.

At present, Oulare is on loan in the Belgian second-tier with RWD Molenbeek from Barnsley, who signed him permanently last summer.
