In recent years, Swansea City have seen their time in the Premier League come to an end after a seven-year stint - which came after a climb up the EFL pyramid that included three promotions in the space of six years.

Since dropping out of the top flight in 2018, the South Wales outfit have been trying to get back to where they once were, firstly under the management of Graham Potter, before he headed to Brighton & Hove Albion and was replaced by Steve Cooper.

Cooper's time in charge saw two Championship play-off finishes and one final loss at Wembley before his exit, and the 2021-22 campaign was one of rebuilding under Russell Martin, who is trying to piece together a squad that can play effectively in his style of football.

There has been some smart recruitment - both in the loan market and in permanent deals - in recent years, but there's also been signings that failed to deliver the goods when expected.

Let's look at eight individuals that underwhelmed supporters of the Swans during their time at the club.

Swansea made one of the most expensive acquisitions in their history in 2017 when bringing Mesa to the club from Las Palmas in Spain for a fee of £11 million.

He was supposed to keep things ticking over in the middle of the park with a wide array of passing ability, but Mesa appeared just 11 times in the Premier League and then spent the second half of the 2017-18 season on loan at Sevilla.

That was turned into a permanent move in 2018 - he now plies his trade for Real Valladolid, who have just been promoted to La Liga.

Following a prolific spell at Vitesse, Bony arrived at Swansea in 2013 and became a cult hero with fans, whilst continuing his fine form by scoring 25 Premier League goals in 54 outings.

A big-money move to Man City followed, but he returned to the Liberty Stadium in 2017 after failing to impress at the Etihad Stadium.

The Ivorian wasn't exactly the same player though upon his return as he suffered from niggling injuries before breaking down with a knee injury.

When he recovered from that setback, Swansea were in the Championship, and after just seven appearances in the second tier, Bony headed to Qatar to sign for Al-Arabi on loan before being released from his contract in the summer of 2019.

Having been without a club for over a year, Bony joined NEC Nijmegen in January on a short-term contract, but appeared just once in the Eredivisie before the season finished.

Once regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in world football, Sanches was loaned to Swansea in the summer of 2017 from Bayern Munich, and at the age of 20, the Premier League was a steep learning curve for him.

The Portuguese midfielder played just 12 times for the Swans and did not make an appearance at all in the second half of the campaign, compiling a miserable year on a personal level.

Following that, Sanches returned to Bayern and then signed for Lille in 2019, and whilst he hasn't hit the heights expected of him earlier in his career, he's still amassed 32 caps for his country.

Gyokeres was an underwhelming signing in the sense that we now know what he can do at Coventry City at Championship level - but he failed to show it for the Swans.

The Sweden international signed on loan until the end of the season in October 2020, but appeared just 11 times in the Championship and failed to get on the scoresheet, with just two of his outings being from the start.

Brighton recalled Gyokeres in January 2021 due to his lack of game-time, having failed to really impress the fans or Steve Cooper, but since his arrival at the Sky Blues, initially on loan, he has scored goals for fun and is being linked with a big-money move this summer.

A product of the Chelsea academy at Cobham, Abraham had just come off the back of a fantastic scoring season with Bristol City in the Championship when he headed to the Swans for the 2017-18 Premier League season.

Abraham found it tough though, scoring just five times in 31 league appearances and went nearly six months without a goal in the top flight.

He did however end up showing his true form in the Premier League with a bit more experience under his belt, firing in 15 goals for Chelsea in 2019-20 and becoming an England international with 11 caps to his name - he's now at Italian giants AS Roma having scored 27 goals in all competitions in his debut season.

Along with Josh Maja, Asoro was one of the bright lights of the Sunderland academy a few years ago, but upon their relegation to League One in 2018, he was sold to the Swans for £2 million.

With 26 Championship appearances under his belt, the Swede was expected to make an impact under Graham Potter, but instead he failed to score in 14 league appearances in his first season, and then headed out on loan to Groningen in Holland the following campaign when Steve Cooper decided he wasn't in his plans.

A further loan to Genoa followed, where he failed to make an appearance, and then he moved on to Djurgardens in his home nation - where he currently plays now.

Swansea smashed their club record for Baston in August 2016, paying £15.5 million to Atletico Madrid for his services.

Fans expected plenty of goals for that price-tag - unfortunately though just one arrived in 18 appearances, and only four of those were starts.

Two loan spells back to his home nation of Spain followed, but he surprisingly featured for Swansea in the Championship in 2019-20, scoring six goals in 19 appearances in the first half of the campaign before joining Aston Villa in January 2020 on a free, with the club wanting him off the wage bill.

Baston now plays for Real Oviedo of Spain's second tier, where he notched 22 goals in league matches this past season.

When Liverpool were going through a defensive crisis during the 2020-21 season, Williams was given many opportunities to impress, having been on loan at non-league Kidderminster Harriers in the season prior.

After 19 appearances in all competitions for the Reds - some of them being very impressive - Williams was sent out on loan to Swansea in 2021-22, and considering he looked classy enough at times for the Reds he was expected to do big things under Russell Martin.

It went horribly wrong for the youngster though, making just seven appearances for the club before he was recalled in January - he will now probably go on another loan away from Anfield to banish the nightmares of his Swansea spell.
