Portsmouth will be determined to make a positive start to the 2022/23 campaign in League One later this year.

Despite showing some signs of promise at this level during the previous term, Pompey finished 10 points adrift of the play-off places in the third-tier standings.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has made some alterations to his squad.

As well as waving goodbye to Shaun Williams, Paul Downing, Callum Johnson and Ollie Webber, Cowley has bolstered his options in the heart of midfield by signing Marlon Pack.

Pack will be keen to make a positive impression in his second spell at Fratton Park after signing a two-year deal with Pompey.

Whereas Portsmouth have managed to unearth some gems in the transfer market over the years, they haven't always been able to nail their recruitment.

Here, we have decided to take a look back at some of the club's transfer business by revealing where eight of Pompey's most underwhelming signing are now...

When Portsmouth signed Eoin Doyle on loan from Preston North End in 2017, they would have been hoping to see the forward find the back of the net on a regular basis in League Two.

However, the 34-year-old only managed to show glimpses of his ability as he scored twice in 12 appearances for the club.

After returning to Preston, Doyle went on to feature for Bradford City, Swindon Town and Bolton Wanderers before sealing a move to St Patrick's Athletic earlier this year.

Doyle has netted seven league goals for the Irish side since making this particular switch.

John Akinde joined Portsmouth in 2013 following a stint at Crawley Town.

The forward failed to make an impact for Pompey during his time at Fratton Park as he didn't score a single goal for the club despite making 11 appearances.

Akinde currently plays for League Two side Colchester United.

In the previous campaign, the forward managed to find the back of the net on two occasions for Colchester whilst he also chipped in with three assists.

Portsmouth decided to bolster their attacking options by swooping for Milan Lalkovic in 2016.

This particular piece of business turned out to be somewhat of a mistake by Pompey as Lalkovic failed to deliver the goods for the club.

In the 18 games that he played for Portsmouth, the winger only scored once and didn't manage to provide any assists for his team-mates.

Lalkovic currently plays for Greek outfit Makedonikos FC who achieved promotion last season.

Nicke Kabamba joined Portsmouth following a fruitful stint at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Unable to adapt to life at Fratton Park, the forward failed to score a goal in the six games that he featured in for the club and eventually moved on to pastures new in 2018.

Signed by Northampton Town last year, Kabamba was loaned out by the League Two outfit to Woking midway through the 2021/22 campaign.

The Cobblers cancelled Kabamba's contract earlier this month and he has since secured a move to Barnet.

Lloyd Isgrove would have been hoping to make a positive impression for Portsmouth during his loan spell at the club.

However, the 29-year-old didn't make a single appearance for Pompey as he struggled with his fitness.

After being released by Barnsley in 2019, Isgrove played for Swindon Town in the following campaign before sealing a switch to Bolton Wanderers.

The winger has scored four goals and has provided five assists for the Trotters in 58 appearances for the club.

Bryn Morris flattered to deceive at times for Portsmouth as he struggled considerably with his consistency.

During his final season with Pompey, the midfielder only managed to average an underwhelming WhoScored match rating of 6.32 in the third-tier.

Signed by Burton Albion last year, Morris spent the second-half of the previous campaign on loan at Hartlepool United.

Having recently returned to Burton, Morris could be in line to feature against Portsmouth when the two sides meet on September 13th at the Pirelli Stadium.

James Vaughan was signed on a temporary basis by Portsmouth in 2019 from Wigan Athletic.

The forward was unable to make a positive impact for Pompey as he failed to score a single goal in the 11 games that he played for the club.

Following spells at Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers, Vaughan opted to call time on his playing career.

The 33-year-old was appointed as Tranmere's Sporting Director earlier this year and is currently involved in helping the club conduct their transfer business.

After impressing in pre-season last year, Gassan Ahadme would have been hoping to set the third-tier alight with his attacking displays.

However, the forward only managed to score once in 10 competitive appearances for Pompey before having his loan spell cut short by Norwich City.

Signed on a permanent deal by Burton Albion earlier this year, Ahadme went on to make 14 appearances for the club in the second half of the season.

Ahadme will be hoping to help the Brewers push on in League One when the new term gets underway.
