Charlton Athletic have experienced a mixed amount of success when it comes to recruiting players.

Whereas the Addicks have made some fantastic signings over the years, there have been a number of occasions where a player has ultimately failed to live up to expectations at The Valley.

During the current transfer window, Charlton have opted to make some alterations to their squad.

As well as waving goodbye to the likes of Ben Purrington and Conor Washington, the Addicks have managed to secure the services of some fresh faces.

Eoghan O'Connell and Mandela Egbo are both set to feature for Charlton next season after joining the club earlier this week.

The Addicks will be keen to push forward as a club under the guidance of their new manager Ben Garner when the 2022/23 campaign gets underway in July.

Here, we have decided to take a look back at some of the club's transfer business from recent times by revealing where eight of Charlton's most underwhelming signings are now...

Paul Smyth would have been hoping to make a positive impression during his temporary spell at The Valley in 2020 after joining the Addicks from Queen Park Rangers.

However, the winger only managed to register three direct goal contributions in 14 appearances before returning to the R's.

Smyth currently plays for League Two side Leyton Orient.

During the previous term, the 24-year-old scored three goals for Orient in the fourth-tier whilst he also netted the winner in the club's EFL Trophy clash with Charlton Athletic.

Conor McAleny joined Charlton on loan from Premier League side Everton in 2015.

The forward ultimately failed to impress during his time with the Addicks as he was unable to find the back of the net in the nine games that he participated in.

McAleny joined League Two side Salford City last year following at Oldham Athletic.

The 29-year-old struggled with his consistency last season as he only scored twice in the fourth-tier for the Ammies.

Another player who Charlton decided to make a temporary move for is Andre Green who sealed a switch to The Valley in 2020.

The winger would have been hoping to help the Addicks retain a place in the second-tier in this particular stint.

However, after providing three direct goal contributions in his first four league appearances, Green failed to score or produce an assist during the remainder of the campaign as Charlton were relegated to League One.

Green currently plays for Slovan Bratislava who won the Fortuna Liga title last season.

Charlton bolstered their options in the heart of midfield last year by signing Harry Arter on loan from Nottingham Forest.

The Republic of Ireland international would have been hoping to establish himself as a key member of the club's squad during this stint.

However, Arter returned to Forest earlier this year after only making four league appearances for the Addicks.

Following a temporary spell at Notts County, the midfielder linked up with the Reds again in May.

Reza Ghoochannejhad joined Charlton in 2014 following a spell with Belgian outfit Standard Liege.

The 34-year-old only managed to show occasional glimpses of his ability in English football as he scored five goals in 42 appearances.

After leaving Charlton on a permanent basis in 2016, the Iranian went on to feature for Heerenveen, Apoel Nicosia, Sydney FC and PEC Zwolle during the latter stages of his career.

Ghoochannejhad decided to retire from football last year.

Charlton opted to sign George Tucudean for a fee believed to be in the region of £720k in 2014.

The forward failed to live up to expectations at The Valley as he struggled to adapt to life in the Football League.

During the 23 games that he played for the Addicks, Tucudean provided an underwhelming total of four direct goal contributions.

Following spells at Pandurii, FC Viitorul and CFR Cluj, Tucudean decided to call time on his career in 2020.

Ronnie Schwartz sealed a move to Charlton for a fee believed to be in the region of £241k in 2021.

The forward was unable to make a lasting impact during his time at The Valley as he only scored once in 16 appearances.

Schwartz sealed a move to Danish outfit Vendsyssel FF earlier this year.

During the previous campaign, the forward struggled to adapt to life with his new club as in the 13 appearances that he made for them, he only managed to find the back of the net on one occasion.

Juan Familia-Castillo would have been hoping to feature regularly for Charlton during the second half of the previous term after joining the club on loan.

However, the 22-year-old was limited to just three appearances for the Addicks as he failed to win over the trust of the club's former boss Johnnie Jackson.

Familia-Castillo returned to Chelsea when his temporary deal at The Valley expired last month.

As reported exclusively by Football League World in May, Fulham are currently weighing up a possible swoop for the defender.
