Charlton Athletic's season didn't get off to the best start last year under the management of Nigel Adkins but things improved a bit once Johnnie Jackson took over as manager leading to him getting the job on a permanent basis.

However, despite a solid 13th place finish by the end of the season, the club relieved their former player of his duties ready for the new season.

Ben Garner has now been appointed as his replacement after leaving his post at Swindon Town and the club will now be getting ready for this summer's business.

The club will be aiming for a strong season next year with the hope of making it back into the Championship which will no doubt require some good signings being made during the off season.

With that in mind, here we take a look at eight players from League One that Charlton Athletic may look at targeting this summer.

A key area where Charlton need to look at adding to right now is their defence.

Following the departures of Jason Pearce, Akin Famewo and the uncertainty over Ben Purrington, there are not many defensive options at the club as it stands.

Elliott Moore has been a solid player for Oxford United for the past number of seasons and as well as being reliable at the back, he also has the ability to contribute goals too.

He did just sign a new contract with the Us so this would be a transfer that would cost Charlton but with a new manager in the door, the player could be convinced to make a move.

Thinking further on the subject of defensive reinforcements, Macaulay Gillesphey from Plymouth Argyle could be another good addition.

The Pilgrims had one of the best defensive records in the league this season and considering he made 40 appearances for the side, he clearly had a big part to play.

He's under contract at Plymouth for another year but considering this could be the club's last chance to cash in on him, a good offer could tempt them.

Angus MacDonald is a centre-back who's out of contract with Rotherham United this summer and therefore would be available on a free transfer.

Although he only made seven appearances for the Millers this season, he played 39 times for them in the Championship as well as having played in the Championship for Barnsley.

With some regular game time and under the right management, he could be a good addition to the squad even if as a reinforcement rather than first team player.

Alternatively, Plymouth's James Wilson is another strong centre-back from the Pilgrims' defence.

Although 33-years-old, the defender made 42 appearances this season and was able to contribute two assists as well.

With Plymouth being a side pushing up the table alongside Charlton next season, poaching one of their defensive options could be not only a boost for their own side but also weaken their competition for next season too.

As someone with plenty of experience, he could prove to be a good leader in a team looking for promotion.

Charlton will also be looking to strengthen their attacking options next season and somewhere they could look for this is in Lincoln City's Anthony Scully.

The winger has proven he can score goals this season being the Imps' top scorer with 11 goals. However, having provided seven assists too, he is clearly able to boost attacking efforts.

In a good attacking set up, his skills could be utilised and he would fit well into a Ben Garner side.

Callum Paterson may be another option for an attacking figure in the club.

Although the 27-year-old scored just six goals and contributed three assists this season, the player definitely has the potential to reach the bigger numbers and is another one that in an effective attack could provide a lot of power.

His contract at Wednesday is up this summer and on a free transfer, this could be a solid addition.

Furthermore, although the Owls fell short of promotion this season, he knows what it takes to be in a side pushing to the top.

A move left-field option for attacking reinforcements may be Connor Wickham.

The 29-year-old may not be a 90 minute every week player but he has shown throughout his career that he does have talent and can score goals.

Although he only scored one for MK Dons in 13 appearances this season, he is a player with the desire to contribute and plenty of experience of doing so.

Furthermore, as he is out of contract this summer, this could be a good free transfer addition as a contributing player.

Another player Charlton could lookout this summer is Tom Carroll who's out of contract at Ipswich this summer and therefore available on a free contract.

The midfielder made only 14 appearances for the Tractorboys this season but he is a player with plenty of football league experience.

The only issue may be making sure he stays injury free as that has slowed him down. However, if he stayed fit, he could be a solid addition to the side.
