Blackburn Rovers got back to winning ways on Saturday with a relatively comfortable 2-0 success over Millwall at Ewood Park.

Tony Mowbray's side went into the clash without a win in three across all competitions, so there was a bit of pressure on the side.

However, they responded well, with Derrick Williams the unlikely man to inspire the victory - as our graphic shows.

The centre-back wasn't always a regular last season, however Charlie Mulgrew's departure has ensured he is in alongside Darragh Lenihan at the heart of the defence and their partnership has been promising.

Whilst Williams was dependable at the back, he actually made the decisive contribution going forward, scoring the opener with a brilliant shot that gave Bartosz Bialkowski no chance.

That allowed the hosts to relax and they played some good stuff as the game progressed and deservedly doubled their lead through Bradley Dack.

However, they didn't have it all their own way, but whenever the Lions attacked Williams stood strong.

His eight interceptions were a season-high for him from an individual perspective and it shows how he positioned himself well throughout and also how he was willing to step up to nick ahead of the strikers.

The 26-year-old's excellent positional play was also evident with the six clearances he made and it showed that he was capable of standing up to the physical test that Neil Harris' men provide.

Millwall like to go direct early and with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, and then Matt Smith, they are always a threat in the box but Rovers, led by Williams, coped pretty well on the whole.

The 80% aerial duels won is a very respectable total for the former Bristol City man, particularly given the opposition and that dominance ensured the Lions couldn't build momentum.

Finally, to top off what was a superb display from Williams, he was also assured in possession, recording an 84% pass success rate which is again impressive.

Mowbray places a real emphasis on playing stylish football and that requires the centre-backs to be comfortable on the ball and the Ireland international is competent which helps the side build up play and feed the likes of Dack, Adam Armstrong and Stewart Downing in the final third.

The challenge for Williams, and the rest of the team, is to maintain the standards they showed on Saturday as they look to push on up the table - starting against Reading this weekend.
