Aston Villa are currently preparing for the play-offs and they will be hoping that Lewis Grabban can continue his good form to fire them back to the Premier League.

Grabban joined on loan from Bournemouth in the January transfer window, having spent the first half of the season on loan at Sunderland.

His goals for Aston Villa have been crucial and he is bound to be attracting attention this summer with Bournemouth not keen on keeping him.

Here, FLW shines a spotlight on his time at Aston Villa and considers whether he would be a good addition for Southampton - who have recently confirmed their safety in the Premier League.

Grabban averages over a goal every other game, having scored eight times for the Villains in just 15 appearances.

Along with his 12 goals for struggling Sunderland, the 30-year-old has reached 20 league goals for the season in the second tier.

His all-round game has been impressive too as he has held the ball up well, got others into the game and laid on 11 chances for his team-mates, with one assist for Villa.

But would he be a good fit at Southampton?

While Grabban has been prolific this season, you only have to look at his previous shortcomings in the top flight to be apprehensive about any move to the Premier League.

Grabban has just one goal ever in the top tier of English football in 24 matches, spanning three seasons.

Why, at the age of 30, would he suddenly turn a corner and start firing in the Premier League?

If he is not good enough for Bournemouth, then Southampton must aim higher than trying to sign Grabban.

If I was Southampton, I would avoid this deal and sign a better striker to compete with Charlie Austin, Shane Long, Guido Carrillo and Manolo Gabbiadini next season.
