Securing a Championship play-off spot on the final day of the season, Sheffield United are eyeing an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Yorkshire club managed to beat Fulham 4-0 on Saturday to conclude the normal Championship campaign, and whilst the Cottagers already had the title wrapped up before the weekend's clash, it was still a mightily impressive performance.

Starting the season rather slowly, Paul Heckingbottom has managed to find success with the Blades, with a play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest now to prepare for.

With the Blades still not knowing what division they will be playing their football in next season, it remains to be seen how recruitment might go at Bramall Lane this summer.

Whilst we wait and see how Sheffield United fare up in the play-offs, we take a look at eight free agents, or soon-to-be free agents who the Heckingbottom could look to bring into the squad during the summer...

One player who would appear to be a shrewd addition regardless of what division Sheffield United are playing their football in next season in Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell.

Nottingham Forest, West Brom, and now Premier League club Bournemouth are all interested in the 27-year-old, meaning it would likely be a tough one to pull off.

However, Rothwell's marauding runs forward from midfielder, combined with his productivity in the final third, makes him completely different option to the midfielders that the Blades already have.

Jed Wallace is another who fits the description even if promotion to the Premier League is secured via the upcoming play-offs.

Possessing the versatility to operate as a number 10 or on either wing, Wallace is someone who could bring real attacking edge to Bramall Lane, especially if Morgan Gibbs-White does not return.

Wallace is someone who establishes excellent working relationships with the forwards in his team, with the physicality of Oli McBurnie, pace of Rhian Brewster and attacking intelligence of Billy Sharp, all likely to benefit a player like the current Millwall man.

Sticking on the theme on number 10's who can also operate on the wings, Tom Lawrence is another who could player at the top end of the Championship, or in the division higher.

Possessing an excellent understanding of the game, he is another one who would thrive off having the aforementioned trio in front of him.

Lawrence has emerged as a talismanic figure at Derby over the years, proving to change games with his ability to drive forward and commit players, whilst also displaying excellent ability when in the final third.

Kane Wilson has been mightily impressive in a Forest Green Rovers shirt this season and is certainly someone who is too good for the level he has been playing.

Yes, FGR have now been promoted to League One, however, Wilson has been a star from start to finish and a move higher up the pyramid would be justified.

With Jayden Bogle suffering injury that is likely to mean that he will miss the start of next season, Wilson represents a youthful, attack-minded option with near-perfect delivery.

On the complete flip side of things, Ashley Young provides experience, versatility and higher-level knowledge, with the wing-back's contract at Aston Villa set to expire.

One thing that Young and Wilson do share is the ability to consistently deliver excellent crosses, something that would only benefit the likes of McBurnie and Sharp.

Sheffield United have suffered lots of injuries to key players this season, with a move for someone as versatile as Young perhaps an appropriate, cautious move.

If promotion to the Premier League cannot be secured via the play-offs, then it is likely that the Blades would face a tough task in keeping Sander Berge.

Yes, he still does have another two years left on his Sheffield United contract, however, he is someone who has often looked a level above, especially during the latter part of the campaign.

Therefore, one player who could represent a cost-efficient option in going some way to replace Berge is Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota, with the energetic, tenacious and technically-gifted midfielder likely to have played his last game in a Reading shirt.

On the theme of Berge potentially leaving, Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff is another option who the Blades should at least consider.

Possessing the relentlessness, higher-level experience and high ceiling to justify a move, perhaps wages could act as an immediate barrier.

Longstaff's situation at Newcastle is very uncertain, and should he not agree fresh terms, then it would be no surprise to see some of the Championship's top clubs - with the highest budgets - looking into the possibility of getting his signature.

West Ham United's Ryan Fredericks finds himself out of contract at the end of the month, and it is difficult to determine whether he is likely to attract current Premier League interest.

Possessing bags of pace and attacking threat, he is certainly someone who could suit Sheffield United's system that places high importance on the attacking abilities of wing-backs.

As mentioned before, Bogle could miss the first few weeks of next season, with a player like Fredericks acting as someone who could certainly cut it regardless of what division they are playing their football in.
