After showing promising signs throughout the campaign, Queens Park Rangers’ promotion bid fell short at the crucial stage of the season.

When results matter most, the R’s were unable to pick up the points and they would eventually drop out of the top six as a result.

In the end, the club finished the season 11th in the Championship and it has been confirmed that current boss Mark Warburton will leave the club this summer.

With plenty of players on their way out of the door, either via contract expiry or returning to their parent clubs from loans, the next man in the dugout at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium certainly has a job on their hands.

With that being said, one area they could look to for re-enforcements is the free agent market, with a number of good Championship options set to be available this summer.

Here, we’ve picked out eight players that could fit into the QPR squad next season, largely going off positional need given we aren't aware who will be in the R's dugout next season.

Having released David Marshall and Kieren Westwood last week, one area that QPR are certainly going to need re-enforcements this summer is in-between the sticks.

With several goalkeepers in the Championship set to be free agents, it would only make sense for the club to target at least one player from them.

One of these could be current Sheffield United goalkeeper Adam Davies.

Having deputised for the season at Bramall Lane, Davies could come in and be the number two at QPR, but also compete for the number one position, given he impressed when having to step in for the Blades in 2021/22.

The 29-year-old made 12 league appearances this campaign, keeping five clean sheets.

Another goalkeeper that the club could target is current Cardiff City shot-stopper Alex Smithies.

Smithies has proven to be a good operator at Championship level in recent years, and made 29 appearances for the Bluebirds this campaign.

He only kept five clean sheets in those matches, but we must bear in mind that Cardiff were a side down towards the lower end of the table.

Given their current goalkeeping predicament, QPR could do far worse than Smithies on a free this summer.

Another area that Queens Park Rangers could be looking for re-enforcements in this summer is centre-back.

There has been speculation that current defender Rob Dickie could make the move to the Premier League this summer, in which case, the R’s would be light.

In that eventuality, they could target somebody like Darragh Lenihan from Blackburn Rovers.

Lenihan is still in negotiations over a new deal at Ewood Park, but given it has got to this stage, there has to be a chance the two parties don’t come to an agreement.

In that eventuality, QPR should be all over the situation and do everything they can to bring Lenihan to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Alfie Mawson is another name that could come in and add to the R’s backline if they are looking at central defenders this summer.

Mawson is out of contract at Fulham come the end of June after barely getting a look in at Craven Cottage this campaign.

The 28-year-old has bags of ability – his problem has been staying fit.

On a free transfer, though, providing the R’s tempered their expectations over what he could offer, Mawson could be a solid addition.

With Dominic Ball having been released by the club last week, the club may also be seeking a central midfielder in the transfer market this summer.

One name that could make sense in this regard is Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ralls.

Ralls made 29 appearances for Cardiff in the Championship this season, scoring once and providing six assists.

On a free transfer, the 28-year-old would be an asset for most Championship clubs this summer, QPR included.

On to the strikers now, and having released Charlie Austin, and with Andre Gray’s loan from Watford coming to an end, this is another area QPR need re-enforcements this summer.

One man they could go for is Gray himself, given his current contract at Watford expires at the end of June.

Gray played somewhere between a starting and squad role for the R’s this season, but did well, scoring 10 goals in 28 Championship outings.

Impressively he did this averaging 0.66 goals per 90 – the sort of efficiency QPR may want to bring back this summer.

Another striker the R’s could target this summer, and somebody who is more in the Austin mould rather than Gray is Michael Smith.

Smith’s contract expires at Rotherham United next month and despite their promotion to the Championship, it seems he is on the way out.

Smith was prolific in League One this campaign and has proven he can rack up a decent goal tally in the second tier previously.

In a good Championship side, he could easily hit double digits in goals and on a free, QPR could do far worse.

If QPR want to target a striker slightly younger than Michael Smith and Andre Gray, Harry Cornick may be a good option.

Cornick’s current deal at Luton Town expires next month and there is yet to be any announcement regarding a new deal.

This is despite Cornick having had a decent campaign for the Hatters, scoring 12 goals and assisting five times in 38 Championship appearances.

If he does leave Luton this summer, Cornick could be a nice addition to QPR’s attacking options given the players leaving the club now the season has ended.
