Oxford United boss Karl Robinson has made it clear he wants the club to be proactive this summer ahead of another season in League One

Robinson's side missed out on the play-offs this season and could be set for a fair bit of squad turnover with some players set to depart at the end of their contracts and others drawing links to the Championship.

He's said previously the club need to be "ultra-aggressive" in the upcoming window while in late April he indicated he'd already met with agents as he looked to ensure the U's were well set for the start of the window.

With clubs confirming their retained and released lists following the end of the regular season in all three EFL divisions, we have a clearer picture of which players are available.

With that in mind, we've highlighted eight free who would fit perfectly into Oxford United's squad...

Matty Taylor finished the 2021/22 campaign with 20 goals to his name but the 32-year-old striker clearly needs more support in the final third.

Adding more forward firepower has to be high up on Robinson's list of priorities and James Norwood, who has been linked with the Us previously, could be someone that he turns his attention to.

Norwood has an excellent goalscoring record in the lower divisions and Ipswich Town have confirmed his exit.

If it's forward firepower that Oxford are looking for then Dom Telford should be someone on their radar.

A similar player to Taylor in terms of stature and style of play, the 25-year-old won the golden boot in League Two in 2021/22 with 26 goals but is out of contract at Newport County.

Making the step up will not be easy for Telford but he's high on confidence now and it's certainly a risk worth taking for Robinson and co.

Another striker that Oxford could target in an attempt to bolster their options in the final third, Conor Washington has left Charlton Athletic at the expiration of his contract.

The 29-year-old has reached a double-figure goal tally in the third tier on a number of occasions and would provide the Us with some cover and competition for Taylor.

In many ways, it's a no-brainer for Oxford and a move you'd hope they're already working on.

Left-back is also an area that the club need to strengthen, with Steve Seddon the only option in the senior squad now as Ciaron Brown has returned to Cardiff City following his loan deal.

Morecambe have confirmed that Greg Leigh will be leaving the club and he looks like an obvious option for the Us to move for.

The 27-year-old has been hugely impressive for the Shrimps – both defensively and going forward – and has the qualities to feature either as a left-back or a left wing-back.

That should appeal to the Oxford boss, who has already indicated he's keen to have the option of playing both systems next season.

A more experienced option than Leigh, Lee Wallace has left QPR at the end of his contract and is now a free agent.

The 34-year-old was a reliable performer in the Championship last term and could be a stopgap option as cover and competition for Seddon.

Wallace may not be getting any younger but he's got a huge amount of experience and that could prove useful for the Us as they mount another promotion push.

It's been confirmed that James Hanson is leaving Oxford this summer while Mark Sykes is expected to depart and Cameron Brannagan has been linked with a Championship move.

That leaves the club short in midfield and Marlon Pack could fit the bill after his release from Cardiff City.

The step down to League One level could suit the 31-year-old, who helped Bristol City win the division at a canter in 2014/15.

The Championship's loss could well be Oxford's gain.

Replacing the attacking contributions of Sykes and, perhaps, Brannagan is something Robinson will be keen to do over the summer and Davis Keillor-Dunn could be just the sort of addition to help do that.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed two outstanding seasons at Oldham Athletic – scoring 28 goals and providing 12 assists – but is now set to become a free agent.

He is ready to step up to the third tier and Oxford could offer him a way to do that.

Gillingham have been relegated to League Two but Ben Thompson will surely not be playing in the fourth tier next season.

He has left the club following the expiration of his contract and should have suitors at League One level after kick-starting his career following his Millwall exit in January.

Thompson is a quality player and could help fill the void left by Oxford's midfield departures.

He should be someone that the Us are talking to.
