Millwall only narrowly missed out on the chance to earn promotion to the Premier League.

The final day of the Championship season did not go their way, thus meaning the side finished outside the play-off places.

Gary Rowett’s side ended their campaign with a 1-0 defeat away to Bournemouth, meaning the team finished 9th in the table and six points adrift of the top six places.

A poor run of form around the turn of the year was ultimately the only major dip that could be seen as the period where Millwall let their season slip through their fingers.

However, there is still plenty of room for optimism for the Lions going into the next term having been competitive at the top of the table.

It could be a busy summer ahead as the club looks to bridge that gap to their rivals.

Here are eight free agents who would fit perfectly into Millwall’s squad…

Swift has had an exceptional season with relegation threatened Reading, and played a key role in the Royals’ survival in the second division.

The 26-year old contributed 11 goals and 13 assists in the league, with Paul Ince’s side finishing 21st in the table.

But the playmaker is set to be available as a free agent this summer with his contract expiring in June.

Millwall should do everything in their power to have discussions with Swift over a move as he would be a great asset to the side and could help power a proper promotion push.

Cahill is set to leave the Vitality Stadium as a free agent this summer having helped Bournemouth earn promotion to the Premier League.

The former Chelsea man fell down the pecking order as the season progressed but proved he can still compete at this level on a regular basis.

Despite being 35-years old, Cahill could still be a valuable addition to the Lions’ squad.

His presence as a dressing room leader alone could be a huge asset to the side, let alone his on-pitch experience helping in those big, tense moments involved at the top of the table.

The Cardiff City goalkeeper’s contract expires this summer and he has now likely played his final game for the Bluebirds.

Millwall have the ageing Bartosz Bialkowski in goal, but Smithies could offer great competition for the spot between the sticks.

The 31-year old still has a few years left at the top and could even be an upgrade over the Polish player.

Smithies also has plenty of Championship experience having spent the last decade in the second division.

The Derby County club captain’s contract expires this summer and he will likely be looking for a move to maintain his place in the Championship.

The Rams were relegated to League One, but Lawrence is more than capable of competing at the top of the second division.

Millwall could offer him a route back to this level where he could once again compete for promotion to the top flight.

Lawrence’s performances for Derby this season have also shown the kind of dynamic play that any promotion chasing team could use in their midfield.

While Brady hasn’t had the greatest of seasons with Bournemouth, the Irishman could still offer plenty to any Championship side.

The 30-year old has suffered from injury problems in the past, but now appears to have gotten himself back to full fitness.

The former Burnley man is extremely versatile and can play across the left-wing or through the middle, which is a very useful asset to have in a side.

Brady also has plenty of Premier League experience that he can bring to the team that could help lift the side into a play-off place.

The Irish forward has missed the action in recent months due to injury, but has shown he can still compete at a high level with Sheffield United this season.

McGoldrick has experience in chasing, and earning, promotion to the Premier League and has the goal scoring talents that Millwall could use.

Despite being 34-years old, the striker could also still compete on a consistent basis and has shown the ability to bag 10 goals over a season, which Millwall lacks in the side.

The Welsh midfielder’s time at Stoke City looks like it could come to an end this summer, with his contract set to expire in June.

Millwall could do a lot worse than looking into the possibility of bringing him to the London club this transfer window.

Allen could bring a calmness in possession that Millwall could use in those high pressure moments, and his experience and presence on the ball could be very calming when the team starts to lose control of a game.

While he is past his best, there is still plenty he could offer Rowett’s side.

The Blackburn Rovers defender is off the back of a very impressive season in Tony Mowbray’s side and would be a big upgrade in Millwall’s backline.

His future with Rovers remains unclear, so Millwall should strike while the iron is hot to make a move for the Irishman.

Lenihan was a central figure for the side that finished one place directly above Millwall in the table this season, playing 41 times.

He could bring a solidity at the back that is the cornerstone of any successful promotion bid.
