Luton Town's summer plans are clearly going to be influenced by which division they're playing in next term.

The Hatters have been one of the Championship's surprise packages in 2021/22 – reaching the play-offs despite having much less to spend than most of the other teams in the division.

The job that Nathan Jones has done has been phenomenal and his squad obviously deserve a huge amount of credit as well.

It remains to be seen which division the Hatters are preparing for over the summer but it would be a shock to see them change their business plan completely.

They've made the most of free agents in the past and will likely do so again this summer.

Whether or not they secure promotion, Jones will want to continue to strengthen his options in the summer window.

With that in mind, we've highlighted eight free agents who would fit perfectly into Luton Town's squad...

Brought in on an emergency loan due to Luton Town's goalkeeping injury crisis, Matt Ingram has an opportunity to prove to Jones and co. that they should be signing him permanently.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at Hull and the prospect of joining a Hatters side that are clearly on the up would surely be an attractive one.

Strengthening between the sticks is clearly going to be a priority for Luton and Ingram represents a good option as a free agent.

Adding more depth in midfield is something else that Luton should look to do over the summer and Josh Laurent, who is out of contract at Reading this month, represents one of the best free-agent options out there.

He's a proven quantity at Championship level and could provide cover and competition for the likes of Jordan Clark and Luke Berry next term.

It may be that the Hatters are priced out if other second tier clubs show an interest but he's certainly someone that would strengthen the squad.

Following Barnsley's relegation, Luton could look to offer 23-year-old midfielder Romal Palmer a route back to the Championship.

He looks like the sort of player that could thrive under Jones and given his age, would be a worthwhile investment for the future as he's out of contract at Oakwell.

Palmer would likely be arriving as cover at first but a few years down the line he could become a regular starter in the Hatters midfield.

Amari'i Bell has done an excellent job on the left flank this season but adding some cover and competition for him in the summer would make sense.

A younger, up-and-comer would likely be preferable but Luton shouldn't turn their nose up at Jérémie Bela.

The Frenchman has adapted to the move from a winger to a wing-back this season and is out of contract at St Andrew's.

Luton's goalkeeping issues this term have been no secret and departing Cardiff City shot-stopper Alex Smithies represents a good option.

Smithies has a huge amount of EFL experience – with 450 combined appearances in the Championship and League One to his name – and is a safe pair of hands.

Affording the 32-year-old, who struggled to agree new terms at Cardiff due to the wages offered, may be an issue but it is still something worth pursuing.

Things haven't worked out for him at Swansea City but it could be worth taking a punt on 23-year-old attacking midfielder Yan Dhanda.

There's certainly talent there and he could provide some cover for the likes of Clark and Berry next season.

Signing Dhanda and helping him kick-start his career could really pay dividends down the line for the Hatters – though there is no doubt it's a bit of a risk.

Ryan Allsop's future at Derby County is up in the air given the takeover situation at the club and Luton would be wise to look to capitalise.

He would bring some stability between the sticks and has impressed for the Rams this season in what was very nearly a heroic escape from relegation.

It's not the most exciting transfer ever but at 29, landing the EFL journeyman on a free could prove to be a fantastic bit of business.

Another Derby player that is out of contract this summer, 20-year-old Louie Watson looks like an exciting prospect.

He's shorter on experience than many of the attacking midfielders out there but he's got a huge upside and bringing him to Kenilworth Road could pay dividends further down the line.

Watson has not looked out of place at Championship level in the chance he's got this season and could be a useful squad player next season with the view to a bigger role further down the line.
