Huddersfield Town have had a hugely successful season in the Championship, whatever happens in the play-offs in the coming weeks.

Carlos Corberan has led Town from a relegation scrap last season to third in the division this term, which nobody saw coming.

That’s partly down to what was, at the time, a largely underwhelming summer transfer window that brought a number of free agents to the John Smith’s Stadium, as well as untested youngsters like the impressive Levi Colwill.

Looking ahead to the summer, then, there’s surely going to be the temptation to take a look at the free agent market in a bid to bolster Huddersfield’s squad heading into 2022/23.

There are some really suitable players on the market that could elevate what Corberan currently has available to him, as we identify here:

You feel that Huddersfield’s best chance of signing Wallace would be if they were a Premier League side, given the plethora of options he’s going to have when his Millwall deal expires.

With 38 goals and 41 assists across the last five seasons in the Championship, the 28-year-old has been both prolific and creative.

If he was added to the Huddersfield squad he would help lift the goalscoring burden off Danny Ward, as well as the creative burden off Sorba Thomas.

Football League World were told earlier in 2022 that Boyle was someone Huddersfield were tracking ahead of his contract with Cheltenham Town expiring in the summer.

Boyle has rejected terms of Cheltenham’s latest offer to keep him, pointing to the possibility of a new club by the time 2022/23 comes around.

Given the success of Matty Pearson and Tom Lees, Huddersfield might well look to Boyle to pad out their options at centre-back with another bargain signing, particularly if they are still in the Championship.

The 19-year-old centre-back is on the books at Leeds United and has been floating in-and-around the first-team at Elland Road this season.

However, Kenneh is out of contract at Leeds in the summer and is yet to agree on new terms.

Corberan has an obvious connection to Leeds’ U23s pool, so might be tempted to take a look at a young centre-back, who is also capable in midfield, with a brilliant reputation.

One for the future, you’d imagine.

Clarke-Salter looks set to leave Chelsea this summer as a free agent and might be another defender Town look at.

Given Levi Colwill’s trajectory and the fact he looks destined for an opportunity at Chelsea in the coming pre-season, someone like Clarke-Salter might be a decent recruit on the left side of Corberan’s back-three.

At 24, he’s not as young as Colwill and his potential isn’t as high, although that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a really good addition.

This is quite an interesting one really and you’d imagine that Vydra would have to seriously lower his wage demands to fit Town’s structure. However, he’d be someone you could see thriving under Corberan.

At Burnley, Vydra has never suited the direct style of play the Turf Moor outfit favour.

However, at Huddersfield, Corberan might find a use for Vydra in a front-two, allowing him to come deep and link play.

It could be an intriguing match-up if Huddersfield are alerted to his availability.

Moving back to the centre-backs, someone like Lenihan will be high on the list of many.

Over the years at Blackburn, Lenihan has proved to be a really consistent performer in the Championship, with an opportunity now looming either at the top of the division or bottom of the Premier League.

The likes of Pearson and Lees have done very well this season and you could see how someone like Lenihan would complement the pool of centre-backs at Town given his age.

At 28, he’s somewhere between the 30+ group and the emerging talent, which is necessary.

Despite Reading’s struggles this season in the Championship, someone like Josh Laurent has come out of the campaign with credit still in the bank.

The 27-year-old has made 41 appearances for the Royals, scoring two goals and registering four assists.

He’s going to be another player that’s in-demand if he leaves the Royals and there’s no reason why Huddersfield shouldn’t consider his service.

Corberan does have some very good midfielders on the books but adding a depth of quality with players like Laurent might suit them if they are a Premier League outfit.

This is, admittedly, a signing you could only see happening if Huddersfield fail to win promotion.

If it’s to be another season in the Championship, Smith might well be a striker that is targeted to offer a fresh edge to Town’s attack.

He scored 19 goals this season in League One for Rotherham, helping them to promotion, whilst he has 18 to his name in two campaigns at Championship level.

Smith could be a great freebie to pick up in the event of Wembley heartbreak.
