The big Swansea City news this summer has been the departure of Flynn Downes, with the midfielder moving to West Ham United for a sizeable transfer fee, but the Championship club have made some exciting signings of their own as well.

Ball-playing centre-back Harry Darling is a superb addition and arrives from Russell Martin's old club MK Dons while Matthew Sorinola offers another option at wing-back, Nathan Wood is a bright young defender brought in from Middlesbrough, and the return of Joe Allen has been understandable popular amongst the fanbase.

In what is Martin's first full summer at the helm, we can expect to see the Swans get some more business done as they look to capitalise on some good late-season form while the money should be there after the sale of Downes.

That said, they would be wise not to ignore the free agent market, which could be a useful asset as they look to fill any cracks in their squad.

With that in mind, here are eight free agents that Swansea City should definitely consider...

With Ben Hamer gone and Swansea reportedly open to offers for Steven Benda, a new goalkeeper to serve as cover for Andy Fisher should be on the club's summer shopping list.

There are plenty of options in the free agent market right now and Alex Smithies is among them.

The 32-year-old left local rivals Cardiff City at the end of his contract and boasts more than 300 games of Championship experience.

He's one worth considering.

Likely a cheaper option than Smithies, Connal Trueman's long spell at Birmingham City ended a few months ago and he could make sense as a backup for Fisher.

Trueman is less proven than some of the other free agent keepers but at 26 he could be a longer-term option as cover and, perhaps eventually, competition for the current number one.

While some of the more experienced shot-stoppers may command bigger wages, the former Blues player should be available cheaply.

Rob Elliot is a seasoned keeper with nearly two decades of experience in English football.

The 36-year-old could be a useful stopgap as a backup for Fisher for the 2022/23 campaign – allowing some of their younger keepers to focus on getting more experience at age-group level or even frees them up for a loan move.

It would by no means be the most glamourous signing of the summer but it could be a useful one that solves a current problem for the Swans.

Joe Allen has come in as Flynn Downes' replacement but the Wales international is 32 so bringing in a younger midfielder as well could make sense – both as cover next season and as a long-term option.

Carel Eiting fits the bill and is available after leaving Huddersfield Town as a free agent.

Things ultimately didn't work out for him at the Yorkshire club but the midfielder has the technical ability to match his Ajax pedigree.

Ryan Nyambe's reported deal to Middlesbrough is not done yet, with Football League World revealing that two French clubs are keen to hijack it, and while he remains a free agent he should be someone that Swansea are looking at.

With Cyrus Christie and Hannes Wolf gone, Martin needs more depth at wing-back and Nyambe could provide that.

The 24-year-old is a proven player at Championship level and may be interested in the project at Swansea.

Another wing-back option worth exploring, Tommy Smith is a free agent after his Stoke City contract expired earlier in the summer.

The 30-year-old has proven himself a reliable Championship defender with the Potters and Huddersfield Town while he's certainly capable of influencing the game offensively with his bursting runs down the flanks.

If Martin wants more depth out wide then the Swans could do much worse than signing Smith – though it appears they may face competition from Boro to do so.

Swansea's reported summer interest in Portsmouth's Marcus Harness highlights that they're keen to add more forward firepower and Lys Mousset could be someone they consider.

The 26-year-old is a free agent after being released by Sheffield United and is yet to find a new club so is someone that the Championship side should consider.

He fell out of favour at Bramall Lane but could give the Swans some more dynamism and depth in the final third.

There have been rumours about Joel Piroe's future this summer and Lewis Grabban should be considered as a potential replacement should he depart.

Grabban is a free agent after rejecting a new contract offer from Nottingham Forest and boasts a superb goalscoring record in the Championship – with 112 goals in 283 appearances in the division.

He's 34 now but his 12 goals in an injury-hit 2021/22 campaign shows he can still cut it in the second tier while his experience could be really useful.
