There should be plenty of excitement at Loftus Road ahead of the start of the 2022/23 Championship campaign, with a fresh season on the way and a new manager at the helm.

The next few weeks should give us a bit of an idea about what we can expect from Michael Beale's QPR – with pre-season and any more transfer business shaping our opinion of them.

Three new players – centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter, full-back Kenneth Paal, and on-loan Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts – have join the R's so far but you'd expect they'll get one or two more through the door before the window slams shut on the 1st of September.

It remains to be seen whether Beale is going to be given significant cash to spend but the west London club should be assessing the free agent market as well as they look to bolster their ranks.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of eight current free agents that QPR should definitely consider...

Ryan Nyambe's move to Middlesbrough is not yet sealed – with Football League World revealing this week that two French clubs are trying to hijack it – and the R's should certainly consider a move for the right-back.

At previous clubs, Beale has used a system that favours attacking full-backs and his pursuit of Millwall's Danny McNamara show he's keen to strengthen the right flank.

Signing Nyambe would do just that as the 24-year-old has proven his quality flying down the touchline for Blackburn Rovers in recent years.

Another option at right-back, Tommy Smith is a free agent after leaving Stoke City in the summer.

The 30-year-old is a seasoned player at Championship level, having amassed 240 appearances in the division during his time at both Stoke and Huddersfield Town, and can certainly contribute in the final third – as his seven goals and 30 assists in the second tier show.

Smith could be a smart pickup this summer but the R's would have to move quickly as he looks close to joining Middlesbrough.

The last right-back on our list, Cyrus Christie should be a player that R's supporters recognise given his service for their west London rivals.

He was released by Fulham this summer and would certainly provide Beale with another option on the right and one that isn't afraid to get forward.

Christie has played as a wing-back for much of his career so being asked to get forward is hardly going to be new to him.

Even with Jake Clarke-Salter signing, the R's still look as though they do with adding more depth at centre-back.

Alfie Mawson has been linked with the W12 outfit previously and is now available after leaving local rivals Fulham earlier this summer.

He served as a backup for the Cottagers last season but didn't look out of place when called upon and would strengthen Beale's defensive options.

The west London club should also consider reigniting their interest in Mawson's former Fulham teammate Michael Hector.

He too has been released after Marco Silva's side won promotion to the Premier League having served as a backup to the starting duo last season.

A calming and yet commanding presence at the back, the R's could do a lot worse than adding the 29-year-old to their squad if they are indeed looking to bring in more cover at centre-back.

21-year-old Lewis Gibson is yet to sign a new contract at Everton – though there is thought to be confidence they can get him to agree new terms this week.

Should the Toffees fail in that pursuit then the up-and-coming defender would make an ideal target for the R's.

He's got big potential and would be allowed the patience to get used to Championship football as Beale already has some strong options at Loftus Road.

Beale has favoured a 4-3-3 formation at his previous clubs and with Dominic Ball departing, they could use at least one more body in central midfield.

Carel Eiting's career has stuttered somewhat but the Dutch midfielder has the sort of technical ability that you'd expect from an Ajax academy graduate and the R's could offer him a chance to get things going again.

Still just 24, Eiting represents an exciting addition if not one that is readymade to have an impact.

Perhaps not as exciting a signing as Eiting would be, Korey Smith is about as reliable as Championship midfielder's come.

The 31-year-old will give everything for the shirt and is a positive dressing room influnce so it would be a smart bit of business both on and off the field.

If Beale wants to add depth to his midfield, Smith is worth considering after his Swansea City exit.
